Yeah so I've re-installed this and basically if I put it on max (ultra) with everything enabled it is kind of laggy (this is on singleplayer) so I did a google and basically on max it requires 900MB of RAM, I usually only have 800MB free of my 1GB, thats with like nothing else running but the background processes and I tried it without MSN and Xfire but that makes no difference. So until I get 2GB RAM, what should I turn off that is an impact on resources, what eats up the resources? bump maps? I'll turn off something but I don't really want to lower the quality.

Specular and diffuse lighting maps are compressed in high quality mode, but main textures & normal maps are still shown at full detail. It makes very little difference to the image quality - a lot of games do this by default anyway.

You have no choice, really. You have to go to high quality mode unless you have 512+MB video ram. Otherwise you'll get intermittent lag in ultra quality. don't worry, its almost impossible to see the difference unless you squint at still images.

strange, i just fired mine up in ultra 1400x900 and it works stutter free

im sure it was all stuttery last time I played it. are well, stupid computers. All I can think is that i dont have norton firewall and AV running now
