I don't know about the rest of you but for me growing up Doom defined my PC gaming experience. Think most of us will agree that Doom 3 caused a mixed reaction.

What are your hopes for the next game? Is Doom now just another FPS in a crowded market?

It has been 6 years since the last adventure though Hell in space, and now Id Software announced that we should prepare to go back. The company responsible for the best selling first person shooters ever (Id Software) confirmed that DOOM 4 is deep in development. They have been working on the title simultaneously with the upcoming Rage (a post apocalyptic sci-fi FPS).

DOOM 4 will most likely Not be the title of game, but it will indeed be the fourth installment of the series. The game will run on the IdTech 5 engine. But the company wants to make it clear that they are being very careful not to make the game simply a reskin of Rage which uses the same engine. Both games are in developement at the same time, but they will both be independent of each other. The new DOOM will feel like DOOM.

Any word about the games features, characters, new enemies, and gameplay is hush-hush. But it promises to make DOOM fans happy. All we know is like DOOM 2, It's supposed to take place on earth with more rich and dark open enviroments. After huge hiring for the game including an award-winning fantasy writer Graham Joyce, the wait will be worth it. Given Id's past reputation of taking time on their main titles, we can expect it to pay off like it has before.

It is unknown approximately when the game will be released, or for what platforms. However the talk is that it will be soon and more than likely for current gen systems. More information will reported as it is revealed.

to be honest i enjoyed doom 3. i know it didnt feel the same way doom 1 or 2 did but i thought it was a very well made first person shooter.

im already looking forward to what id can do with tech5 engine in the upcoming rage and doom 4. massive open area's where something doom 3 didnt handle well so it may be a refreshing change to have those in doom 4.

knowing id we may be in for a wait tho :)

Grew up to Doom too. I had it (and still have it) for the PS1. Had Final Doom on the PC but was a bit awkward to play from what I remember.

I enjoyed Doom 3 though. I can't believe it was 6 years ago! I remember playing it with my ATI 9800 Pro :) Almost retro!

I must admit I loved the story line in the last iteration of Doom. Although lacking in some area's there was a relatively good back story. Here's hoping the next installment will grip me in much the same way :)

Would love a new Quake tbh. 3 and Live are awesome and all but a fresh Quake could be amazing. I'd like it in the style of the original personally

Doom 4 I'm not too excited about yet. 3 was a solid game, enjoyed it immensely.

It may be a backward step in some folks eyes but I also would like to see the wide open areas that we had before, along with the arcade like feel that gave us a great experience, riddles and traps etc. So, gameplay of yesterday with graphics of today.

Oh yeah, maybe throw in a few diary entries so we can get a background to the NPC's in the story. :)

Doom 3 felt out of date and irrelevant to me, Doom 4 is going to need to perform a miracle. First thing is first, abandon that stupid bodies evaporating after you kill them thing.

I played it forst time on a 9800 Pro as well. Loved it. I recently got it on Steam and playede it maxxed out on my current system. Enjoyed it just as much the 2nd time round :)

i really hope they've done some thing about the woeful enemy count you faced in D3, i really missed the frantic back peddaling from the earlier games as you sought to put some much needed reloading/breathing space between you & the horde baring down on you. I loved the look & story of D3, but it did dissapoint me somewhat in that respect.

Agreed. Get the basics done right first, bullet holes to stay there permanently etc etc.

In fact, I'd like to see this applied to more games. Whenever I play something new I'm always checking out if these sorts of things are included, rather than the advanced flashy stuff, excess cut-scenes etc.

This made me LOL a bit. I still get those moments in Doom/Doom 2 now. "Backpedal! Backpedal!" :D

Doom 3 did have some moments like that though, I seem to remember the trites and ticks were very good for getting me moving backwards as fast as possible.
