Wolfenstein is ID Tech 3...........Doom 4 is ID Tech 5

Now Wolfenstein is pretty bad on my rig, it has slow framerates, crashes at the end of every level and is very slow to reload when you die..... it's RAM intensive.

i bet DOOM 4 will be the same, if not, it still seems worrying to me, because it's a similar version of the same engine, i think it's time to build a new rig, because i dont think mine is anywhere near powerful enough.

i cant see any point in upgrading the MOBO/ RAM to 16GB, without upgrading all the rest...........................uuum not sure

Thats worrying. 8GB not enough RAM?

Wolfenstein (the new order) is idtech5 (unless your talking about the old version but I assume your not talking about Return to Castle Wolfenstein which was on idtech3).

That slow to reload after dying isn't anything to do with PC specs - I saw it happening on someones PC yesterday who had 32GB of RAM, 2 or 3 SLI 780tis and one of the 49xx or whatever CPUs (didn't really take the CPU model onboard but was one of the 6 core + HT intels).

well i'm not sure about enough RAM, it's only what the other guys have said,
but the rig is definitely struggling with Wolfenstein.

i fancy Sapphire Radeon R9 290X Vapor-X OC 8192MB GDDR5 or similar at Xmas,

i dont think i went far enough with the 7970 last time, i should've gone for a bigger spec back then.........uum lots of thinking to do

yea' a buggy game then, because there's loads of complaints on the Wolfenstein thread

even so, i still fancy a new rig, i'm getting that itch !

If your really that into Doom 4 your gonna want to go nVidia really - it won't guarantee a trouble free experience with that engine but AMD drivers seem to struggle with idtech5 stuff far more than nVidia.

Am I right in thinking that id tech 5 is an OpenGL engine?

IME OpenGL does tend to perform better on NVidia hardware.

There has to be more issues with your rig i have the near same rig as you and wolf ran great at 1080p hardly dropped below 50-60 on ultra!

i tell you what does struggle..........ALWAYS HAS.......my Mobo !!! i've got to get that right next time, no more ASrock

AMD are better value for money....Nvidia are too expensive for what they are, i love the 7970 but it's running out of time

yes the rig is dead slow to start up, it fools around with Steam along time before i can get a game running, i've never been able to solve it, a ``so called expert`` said the Mobo was faulty or the software had bugs in it

it takes about 3 minutes before i can click on a game, i've never been able to solve it, at a guess i'd say it needs a new hard drive and fresh upload.....but is this worth it if the rig is starting to get old anyway.

it loads up Steam... then loads up the MOBO software menu stuff....stops.... then re-loads Steam again, i have a feeling that there is loads of stuff running in the background, or stuff that hasn't loaded properly

I was playing Wolfenstein only recently on a stock i5 2500 and a 290 with 8gb RAM never had problems... apart from a ripple down the middle of the screen which was cured instantly by turning on VSYNC. The only complaint i had about it was that it is extremely linear for a game that tells you to explore the environment... best part of the game was the minigame of the original 1st level of the original game.

They should have spent more time/budget on making the game last and have some replay value..

Defiantly a issue then as i have the same cpu @4.5 and 8gb of the same ram and a 7970 but with 3 ssd and 2 2tb drives and mine boots into win 8 in less than 10 sec and can instantly boot a game from that so you maybe need to look into it a bit more bud.
