I've been trying to play Doom 3 again, but I'm finding it nigh on impossible. I've played it before with a 7800GT and had it running nice and smoothly. For some reason with my 8800GT it is absolutely crawling along even on lowest graphics settings. Has anyone got any experience of this problem and have any suggested fixes? I've tried the latest Beta and the latests WHQL drivers from Nvidia, and I've also tried the mood3 tweak program to no avail. It'll seem fine(ish) right up until there are multiple light sources on the screen or any characters / monsters etc.

Dual screens by any chance? If so disable your 2nd screen.
Might also be xfire if you have it, disable it for d3 ( in xfire options) or turn it off altogether.

If you don't have either, then tbh I don't know :(.

Oh great.. disable second monitor and everything is nice and smooth. No other games struggle this badly with two displays :-/

It's a bug with the engine, doom3, quake 4 and etqw seem to have it, other games are fine.

I think if go to your nvidia control panel and go to the 3D settings and go down to doom3 and find "multi-displayed/mixed-GPU acceleration" and put that too "single display performance mode", that way i think you won't have to disable one monitor, not sure tho, but i think it should work.
