With all the recent global instability, it seems like a large scale war is not entirely unlikely. Have you thought about what may happen in the event of a large global conflict?

If this were to happen, and society collapsed, this would probably lead to food and energy shortages. Of course this is the worst case scenario, and most probably will not happen, but its worth having a plan in mind just in case. :D

Many so called doomsday experts would have you believe that in this case it would be best to locate to an area of wilderness. I have slowly but surely built up a kit containing:

Axe
Becker KA-BAR BK2 Survival Knife
Wiehrauch HW98 with Nikon Prostaff scope for hunting small game
Rope
BackPack
First Aid Kit
Rechargeable FlashLight/Standard AA Flashlight
Lots of AA Batteries
Fire Starter

If it all kicked off I would personally try to drive out into the woods and find a log cabin to bug out in.

I have some vintage printed pornography and a can of mulligatawny soup underneath my bed.

LOL! :D:D:D

Main thing you would have to worry about is the rag-tag gangs of fellow survivors who would be killing you for all your nice gear.

Lone Wolf types have no chance unless you can get to an extremely secluded and hard to reach spot (which would make survival more difficult, of course). Or somewhere easily defensible (unlikely to be straightforward)

I live in Scandinavia, so the mass hordes of chavs trying to top me for my shiny things would be less of a problem. If I could get out of the city and to a log cabin. I should mention we would be a family unit. Would probably try to get all our family together to form a clan (they are spread out in europe at the moment). My father in law has a 9mm handgun as its required for his job, and my cousin is married to a police commander so we could probably get some weapon supplies if we could meet up.

Some more things I will purchase:

Fishing rod, reel, hooks, floats etc
Solar charger
Analogue radio
water purification hand pump

forming a family clan?
years alone, cold winters, up in the mountains.
a side ways glance at your cousin.
no non-family members around....

My family also includes my misses.

In the event of a large global conflict I'd probably just sign up to serve. I'm in Cyber Security already, so it'll just be the same stuff, different office.

You don't seem to be prepping for WWIII though, but the zombie aplocolypse.

Do you think there would be conscription? I imagine if WW3 kicked off it would be more like the mega rich off to some secret island bunkers and the rest of us would be left to it.

No tent, sleeping bag, waterproofs, washing stuff....?

There was a survivalist guy who tried to survive in the Scottish Highlands, he was experienced, they found his dead starved body in some wild hut.

Odd choice of location, the place he stayed at seems miles away from forest, not surprising that he died of hypothermia.

I have a tent etc but I was thinking more of either finding a log cabin or building a big shelter ray mears style.

Of course you would, given the sheer huge size of the UK and it's vast, vast forested areas and plethora of abandoned log cabins this is a clear winning strategy.

I live in Scandinavia, read the post before getting on your high horse.

Main core to have IMO though I don't consider them optional or debatable:

Good knife
Source of fire
Poncho (waterproof)
Space blanket (pref. a good one not 99p job)
Lifestraw or Sawyer filtration system
SAS survival guide

Anything else is fluff IMO if you don't have those.

Good suggestions, I have just bought the survival guide, looking into the best water filter.

Correct.
Hoarding supplies and equipment is a great idea if you're serious about being prepared but at the end of the day, it's power in numbers. Once it becomes clear that some sort of collapse is imminent, I would immediately form a group that included family, friends, colegues and others who might have something in common with you. Grouping with random people is not a good idea, you must have something in common to build on.
It is also important to make sure you will be among the elite/leading party of your group. With the legal system down, this is the only way to protect yourself from abuse. A good way to make sure that happens is to form the elite group first. That includes friends and family, people who are already close to you. Then, I would get others who have nothing in common with each other so that they would be unable to form an opposition against the elite.
You must then get your group to live together and make plans to get supplies, find a sanctuary and take long-term measures for sustenance.

I think a small group would be best, because less mouths to feed. No strangers would be accepted into group as they would pose too much risk.

I'd suggest it's bordering on pointless prepping. A) nothing catastrophic is going to happen B) if it all kicks off it's likely the country will still be governed to such an extent they'll sort it all out C) if vast numbers of people are wiped out/it's like 28 Days Later, you will be able to scavenge a ridiculous quantity of stuff from houses/shops/etc... then longer term you can go and get fishing gear from an outdoors shop, etc, etc. Obviously have some food and water knocking about if you live somewhere that might get flooded/snowed in/whatever... but stuff like bug out bags and plans to go and survive in the forest are lol.

What happens if all the petrol pumps run dry - how will the food get to you? If the electricity is shut off, the water system is contaminated and the petrol runs out, your screwed!

still have plenty of camping gear lying about the place, mainly because i cba getting rid of it than an apocalyptic scenario.

tbh if a large scale war is on the horizon, it'll be the kind where we can sit safe and watch it on the news, or the kind you dont want warning of and definatly dont want to survive.

If there is a big war the islamics will be making havoc. Ten times worse than before.

As long as I don't have to bug out I'm generally well prepared. We are not remote but we are off the beaten track. I have a wood stove, a well filled wood store, axe, maul, bow saw and we are surrounded by woods. We have bee hives and normally between 5 and 50 kilos of honey jarred. A freezer full of meat and if the leccy goes plenty of salt (never less than 25 kilos for water softener) to preserve the bigger meat. I have a pressure canner and 50L of assorted jars so I can can any mince or chicken. I have a smoker, never less than 10 kilos of various flour and if push came to shove 25 kilos of pale malt which would make an edible if disgusting porridge. I could go on but my hobbies insulate me against short term issues quite well with no prepper motivation.

You have got it made!
