if i have the option to choose which way a door opens in to a room

is there a rule?

should all doors open to the left or right or it not matter and i just choose according to the room ?

You would normally have the door opening in to a room and to whichever side flows best, making sure to consider furnishings.

Light switches may play an important role if they're already fixed as you need to get to the switch as you're standing on the threshold rather than walking round the door.

Radiators on walls can mean you need to open a certain way to get a full 90degree opening.

If it's a bedroom some hang doors so that you can't see in to the room until the door is fully open so there is an element of privacy.

its a new renovation, light sockets will be installed depending on the way i tell them i want the doors to open

i just didnt know if there was a rule that said, should alway open to the left or if you can have some opening one way and some openeing the other

If its a not private space e.g living room/dinning room etc - then what ever you want/maybe into a wall to maximize space...but private space eg bedroom/bathroom - as said above its the norm for it to maintain privacy to the last min so depending on room layout it may be the left or the right - but as an example - if you walk into a room and a parallel wall is on the left and the room "space" is on the right eg the bed then the door would be hinged on the right side so that you cant see that space till the last min/door fully open - giving the person half naked inside the time to shout at you!

This :)

Although that is old fashioned really. Often you get more space and ease of access by having the doors open against the closest wall, even if not the traditional way for bedrooms?

its only the girlfriend and I so im not too worried to stick to convention for the sake of saving 0.5 seconds of someones modesty .. .

it seems you can do either and i guess we will choose the way that best suits each room ..

I was always told the door should open into the room so the largest part of the room is visible upon entering the room.

But I dont think it really matters. I have doors opening to left and right because of furnishings etc. Whatever works for you I guess.

I have had a right mixture over the years. I just go with (generally) doors opening into the room in whichever direction is most logical to the room layout. Sometimes that's against a corner or wall, sometimes it isn't.

The door should be hung so you always open it with your off hand, leaving your gun hand free to cover your entry... unless you prefer to somersault dramatically through to avoid an attack by Cato, in which case it does not matter.
