The rumors and speculation can cease. Valve is making Dota 2, we've played it, and it's already amazing even though it's not coming out until next year. And we haven't yet laid eyes on Dota 2's biggest innovation: a radical approach to integrating the game's community back into the gameplay itself.

What's a Dota?

Dota 2 takes its name from the Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients, a drastic change to that stock real-time strategy title, which pits two teams of five players against each other in highly competitive, 40-minute or longer matches. Unlike most RTSes, DotA has each player controlling a single hero who levels up and stockpiles gold to purchase powerful equipment and consumables. As computer-controlled armies continually spawn and rush the enemy's base, players are responsible for using their powerful heroes to turn the tide of the battle in their favor.

DotA quickly gained massive popularity on Blizzard's Battle.net service, with the growing community utilizing user-created channels and the rudimentary custom game browser to connect players. As mods tend to do, it branched into several variations as time passed. Eventually, one rose to the top: DotA-Allstars, originally created by Steve "Guinsoo" Feak (now employed with Riot Games designing League of Legends). Allstars is currently maintained and updated by IceFrog (who declined to give his real name), who was hired by Valve in 2009 and is now working on Dota 2.

sounds good, wasn't a massive dota fan but I'm sure valve have some cool ideas to separate it from all the clones out there

I will keep my eye on this, but as somebody has already said i am unsure where this sits on the market. LoL and HoN are already established standalones and lets not forget these are basically all the same game.

Valve has all the corporate power of a sledge hammer. It could be pretty devastating to both competitors if they throw their full weight on it.

i cant get on that source website at the moment, its completely tanked. Who are they? Are they reliable? Why have i never heard of them? Why did valve publish this story through them?

I did enjoy DotA at first, but it was unbalanced to begin with and things only got worse and worse as the insane elitism took over and the addition of even more unbalanced heroes.

I must say though i'm skeptical of Valve can make it worth the while. It seems a bizarre choice for an acquisition.

It's not bizarre, do you know that millions of people play DoTA?

That wasn't why it was bizarre. Well except there already been 2 dota type games out there.

Its just very out of whack with what Valve normally do. Could be no issue which is likely but you never know...

Tried Dota in the past, the player base were such a bunch of elitist kids though that I wanted to gouge out my eye whilst simultaneously chopping off my limbs. So I doubt i'll be buying into this, frankly, odd direction for Valve to take.

I was never a big Dota fan for the same reasons as Eulogy.

I'm pretty big faith that Valve could overcome it with some of the new Steamworks features they've got planned. Time will tell.

Indeed, my brother was 1 of them :p

It was always either full of elitists who just had to win and would use every broken hero they could or people who left for no real reason. You could get the odd nice game but in general i just stuck to TDs... they were nowhere near as bad.

That link is slightly worrying if its true. Its putting out the image of a game that is basically under the control of him and not Valve's normal standards of perfection... which could be a bit dodgy.

is it elitest? ya
is it awesome? ya!
is it completely unbalanced? ya
do i care? nope

not one single bit, dota is good for all the above. problem is not a lot of people dont commit themselves enough to it or moan about it not being balanced...thus completely missing the point of dota in the first place.

cant wait and its running on the sc2 engine right? which is even better/

DotA 2..made by Valve..running on sc2 engine? That seems kind of unlikely.
