can someone check my spec please and let me know if there is something I've overlooked or something that isnt compatible.

I will be looking to overclock this in the future up to about 3ghz.
The system isnt for gaming its for my job (multimedia designer) so the graphics card doesnt have to be the top of the line card but it does need to be able to power 2 30" monitors (when I can afford them that is!! :D)

I already have the hard drives and optical drives for this and it will all be fitting inside a shiny new Lian Li PC-7 SE-B III

any recommendations will be greatly appreciated

Seems like a good system but the thing is, your gfx card has only 256MB of memory, if you are doing 3D rendering and stuff at high resolutions that might become a problem? Maybe someone else can confirm this? I know it matters in games... If this is true, then I'd go for a 512MB card at least.

Seems fine but like someone else has said the graphics card isn't that good. What do you plan to do in terms of gaming and other visual related / high res stuff

Umm, folks, he said he won't be gaming., It's for 2D graphics work. All the graphics card needs to do is power both monitors. It has two dual link DVI connectors so it will work. Personally I'd take the cheapest HD 2600 that had 512 MiB of GDDR3. I think it'll do a little better playing back media due to hardware acceleration of a few popular codecs. It's about the same price too.

Yep, all you need to take not of in deciding whether or not it'll drive the monitors is whether or not both DVI ports are dual-link. The 2600 there does indeed have dual dual-link ports. :)

You could get by with a 256 MiB card but I'd be sure that it has GDDR3 not GDDR2 since it improves performance quite a bit.

the thing is tho I have seen a couple cards around that are dual dual-link dvi but they wont output at 2560 x 1600.

ideally I'd like to get a GeForce 8800 GTS OC 320MB but I dont think I can justify the extra $$$ seeing as I wont be using the card for gaming

You could try to pick one up second hand as they're already obsolete in terms of being the top-end cards. The GT is faster and cheaper than it and the new GTSes are due shortly.

Early December, I'd say. They're always a bit cloak-and-dagger leading up to release so they don't look like fools for missing the release date.
I guess I could hang on another month maybe before I start building this rig

go with an OEM processor if your buying a seperate fan
doesnt the OEM version only come with a 1 year warranty whereas the retail is 3?? then again I guess you void the warranty if you overclock the chip dont you??

sometimes I can be working on graphics that are a couple of GB in file size... I have a 500gb drive set aside thats sole use is a scratch disk

the more ram the better with what I do

doesn't the OEM version only come with a 1 year warranty whereas the retail is 3?? then again I guess you void the warranty if you overclock the chip don't you??
The way CPUs work, if they don't die immediately or within a few days of your initial build it's unlikely they'll die for many years. Of all the components in your rig the CPU will probably be the longest lived.
