So, with the new deals just launched i'm having a dilemna with 2 of them.
For solely gaming, which do you recommend?

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-002-OB&groupid=701&catid=339&subcat=

- 1 x AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core 720 2.80GHz @ 3.50GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail
- 1 x Corsair 4GB DDR3 XMS3 PC3-1600C9 DHX (2x2GB)
- 1 x Arctic Cooling Freezer 64
- 1 x Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard

OR

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-001-OB&groupid=701&catid=339&subcat=

1 X Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.66GHz overclocked to 3.20GHz 4MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor - Retail
1 X Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3P Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
1 X Kingston HyperX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel
1 X Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler

- Both £299.99

My second dilemna, is will I need to upgrade my PSU. It's currently a 460W Coolermaster, with 12V1 - 18amps & 12V2 - 18amps, IIRC.

Link to the PSU

Is that sufficient to power that bundle with a single 4850 & 1HD?

Yeah I think I will go for the AMD, unless some wise sole comes in with an intel response :b

Any thoughts on the PSU issue?

EDIT: I get paid on the 22nd, so I should have time if I buy with cred card before the bundles switch

PSU should cope fine. Solely for gaming, I'd normally recommend AMD as cheaper and roughly the same, but E8400 is awesome and same price in this case so - intel bundle.

Definately the AMD, DDR3 and latest socket. No brainer.

Concurrance - 775 is, while not a dying technology, somewhat limited in upgrade path.

Had I thought about it, I'd have got an AM3 socket rather than my Q6600 SLACR, but then I 'just bought it' when I saw it, rather than doing any major research.

AM3 ForTheWin methinks. The tri-core parts performance is fine, and won't be lacking grunt/threads for 90% of applications 90% of the time, and if you do decide you need four cores [or more - six-shooters are due from AMD soon on the server side, I'd expect them to filter down..] in the future, it should be a 'pop out, drop in' job to replace it.

In my mind for preformance if ur not going to overclock anything the intel scapes it if you are get the AMD. Also the AMD is more more forward looking so would say AMD quite easily.

Shadowake is correct; if we were talking a Corei7 Vs Phenom II then it would be more of a dilemma, but we aren't.

Also, as noted the Q8400, is a crippled-by-design unit designed to fill a market gap - lacking cache and VT instruction sets. If you ever want to run a Vm, it will be crap compared to even a Core2 with VT instructions.

AMD AMD AMD.

sorry to keep banging on, i'm just about to order the AMD bundle, just need to make 100% the 460w coolermaster PSU is sufficient for that 1HD & a 4850.

would appreciate it if someone could clear that up, googling to see if anyone has the same atm
