No, I don't mean overtaking two cars, but when someone in front of you overtakes and you proceed to overtake the cars he has just passed, and then proceed to to overtake him in the same "operation".

Obviously this only really applies on single A roads. I performed an a manoeuvre like this earlier this evening;

Six cars, Golf pulls out of middle, I pull out shortly after, Golf pulls in after overtake and I continue to pass him.

One thing I hadn't really anticipated was that the Golf would continue to accelerate, even once I'm along side him.

Now, we all know if you are being overtaken you should maintain a constant speed and allow the car to pass, but what are your views on a situation like the above? It struck me afterwards that my actions may have been perceived as stupid by the other driver (either that, or he thought I wanted a race :D )

Before people start shouting 'baby killer', there was still enough visible road to allow a 'fall back' the whole time, although I was (rightly) confident I could make the overtake within this 'safe zone' of visibility.

Can we please leave the personal lectures out of it, I'm interested in peoples opinion on this as a theoretical situation you were in yourself

isn't it obvious that the golf that is overtaking wanted to go faster? Wouldn't it have been better to overtake the slower cars then see if the golf would be holding you up? Or was it already holding you up?

I was out on a blast and I knew he would be holding me up, even if he was gunning it. This was evident by him being out of sight within half a mile.

Well, its all about anticipation.

The first car in the slow queue was doing about 30MPH, so I could fairly deduce that there would be space to pull in regardless, as it was very unlikely that the Golf was going to overtake then slow back down to less than 30MPH.

What's even more alarming is when you go to overtake someone on an A road and they think it would be really clever to move into the centre of the road and perform an emergency stop in an effort to block you as some absolute lunatic did to me last weekend. I'm still not entirely sure how I kept it out of his back bumper and out of the scenery.

I'm filled with rage just contemplating such a situation - I honestly couldn't predict what I would do if that happened to me.

Yes, it amuses me when people think that you'll only have a blast if you think you can win. I'm game with just about anything just for a laugh and curiosity.

Out of curiosity, what do you drive that will do over 120 in third gear?

I would wait for the guy to pull in first and then go. I have overtaken a car already overtaking after a roundabout as the 3 lanes merge back into 2 (i.e. 2 on our side, one on the other). That was fun, but I wouldnt make a habit of it.

Heh, this reminds me of a "third lane" incident on a dual carriageway.

Cars on inside lane, I come down the outside lane much faster than them, and all of a sudden a car pulls out in front of me, forcing me to either a. brake as hard as possible and hope I don't hit them too hard, or take "evasive action". This was before the armco was installed, I decided*(Not much deciding to do in a split second, mind) to put my foot down and opt for the grass to make it past. The manoeuvre was completed, and I carried on my merry way, more concerned with how cool it was than the idiot who just cut me up :D
