as i have no idea other than seeing people post they are running 2 cards at once, i have ordered one of these: -

XFX ATI Radeon HD 5850 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

but there is a chance i might be able to get another one off somebody i know.

1st, is it possible or am i being stupid?
2nd, would it make any difference to the performance?
3rd, is the "AVP Edition" any different

1 providing you have the right mobo and PSU it'll work
2 it might lower the minimums a bit in some games and will provide a good average fps increase in CF supporting games
3 the AVP edition just includes a copy of AVP

thanks everybody for the replies, sorry i had to go out to a job call, just got back.

in answer to all questions: -

Mobo: Asus P6X58D-E Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3

CPU: i7 920 + Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B CPU Cooler & Akasa AK-FN058 Apache Black Super Silent 120mm Fan

Ram: Corsair Dominator 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 12800C8 1600MHz Triple Channel Kit

PSU: Tagan PSU PipeRock TG1300-BZ 1300 Watts

will that be ok? this is all hypothetical anyway as he may decide to sell his system complete and not offer me the other card.

thanks for that both of you. if it becomes available i will buy it then.

i'll have a read of your post Ejizz but i will be using my rig on the Panasonic Plasma 50VT20B and hopefully making use of the 3D gaming. as the TV was over £2K i am hoping that will suffice.

Not sure if it will be possible to do 3d gaming with an ATI card on that tv or even with an Nv card as Nv use some form of hardware detection I think for specific compatible monitors?
The good news is only one 5850 is required at that res.

Very nice system btw :-)

ATI cards do not currently support 3D gaming, you'd need to get an Nvidia card for that. With that monitor as Ejizz suggests, it may not actually work with an Nvidia card either, you may need a specific 3D supporting monitor (Worth checking out, or advice from others here).

The second card will improve performance but not by double. Ejizz and a few others go on about microstutter being a major issue with dual/triple/quad card setups, and whilst true, a resolution of 1920*1080 (your TV i assume) is not gonna cause you any problems for at least 2 years.

Be aware that others do cite drivers issue's with crossfire (2 or more cards from ATI) at present, whilst others have known and work fine. Most people that have issues simply run 10.3 (or similiar such as 10.3a/b or 10.4a etc..EDIT: See "cainer's" post below), rather than the later 10.5 onwards as these 'may' cause problems.

Still a very good setup, although you could consider waiting for the 6xxx series cards, and sell the 5850 and get a faster single card :-)

Really hinges on how much you are getting the second card for?

10.4a 10.4b and 10.5 are all fine, 10.6 & 10.7 sucks hard for CF, im not sure about 10.8

thanks for the replies guys.

the gear arrived today so not much choice on the card now. when i originally posted about a graphics card, i did actually say i wanted to play 3D games but if this card doesn't do it then that's my fault for not reading up more on what was recommended. i didn't realise that there was so much involved in 3D output either. i just assumed that any 3D output would play on any 3D monitor/TV as long as the glasses matched that 3D type such as my tv, has the Panasonic "active" 3d.

i'll get this lot together and play then when i have more money, come back and ask what i can spend it on again.:D

in either case, it has got to be a massive improvement on this i'm using right now.

you got a 5850? you need an Nvidia card for 3D vision :/
ati will hopefully have 3D one day

He won't be able to use his £2k TV though...

Edit:
I think I read somewhere that AMD will be supporting a 3d Vision equivalent by Christmas.
If this turns out to be true then the standard will likely be open and won't have specific Hardware verification like Nvidia, so his TV should then work.
Of course this depends on the reliability of the source I read this from and how serious AMD are about 3D.

don't worry Ejizz, i have already come to the conclusion i can't do the 3D bit. having watched your youtube video though, i am now wanting 3 screens like that :D

^^^
Yes they do but they are currently 3rd party drivers like IZ3d i think.
Also not sure if they will work on his TV as I think they only work on their hardware.
