Doug lombardi interview on pc gaming

Excellent article, it definitely dispels a lot of myths and will hopefully shut up the "PC gaming is dying" crowd.

I was really surprised when he said that the PC market in Germany outsells everything except the DS, and especially when he said "If you go around and you look at all these different things that are happening on the PC, and you add them together, my hunch is that [the sales numbers] would actually be much larger than all of the consoles put together. Again, minus the DS, because the DS is this crazy thing by itself."

Interesting stuff indeed. And as mr.sly said, have five stars. :D

People buy a new game and their system is 18 months old and it doesn't run, or it's unplayable, that hurts the PC industry. That person who just spent money on a PC game is going to have a question mark next time he walks into the store. And he's gonna say, "Geez, I don't know, if I buy it on a console I know it's going to work."

this statement is so true, i know a few gamers who did not buy games like crysis simply because they thought (probably rightly) that it wouldn't run well on their PC.

So I mean, I think people just need to do a better job of looking at where gamers are at, being more honest about the system requirements they put on the box, and just sort of taking a step back and saying, "Gameplay is king, performance is second, and graphics are somewhere after that." People have said to us, you know, Portal is cool, but it wasn't the prettiest game. Well, okay, it sold a whole lot, it was named game of the year by over 30 outlets, and many of the people who played it told me they finished it and had a great time. I would much rather have that than have people tell me it was the prettiest game that came out last year.

so much truth this man speaks.

Shame they take stupidly long to release pathetically short games :(

There's a reasons Valve and Blizzard are two of the best devs in the world. They both take as much time as they need to release a quality product. Plus what Gerard above said.

Ep1 and Ep2 are more like expansions or addons, expansions are never usually as long as the game theyre being tacked onto.
I understand that, but I wouldn't call the 3 hours Ep1 and 4 hours Ep2 takes to complete particularly great, especially when you consider how long it took for them to be developed. They were not that fantastic either, just more of the same (not that that's bad, but nothing new). HL2 itself is not exactly a long game either.

Also look at Portal. Took them forever to make, yet takes an hour to complete. Pathetic. Left 4 Dead is also said to be rather short.

Meh, maybe its just because gamers are better these days in fps games than they used to be. If the devs make the ai harder it usually equates to them being more accurate and taking less damage which is pretty cheesy. Strip out vehicles and the games would take longer to get through.

Compared to most modern shooters hl2 is of quite a good length. How long was Halo 3, COD4? Portal came as part of the orange box which gave fantastic value for money in terms of hours of gameplay. You've got to remember that it was a small team working on portal who had just left college. I don't have any problems with waiting for a decent game.

Portal was never meant to be a proper full-length game tho...it was more of a technology demo. There seems to be an equal amount of people saying it's too short as people saying it gets repetitive, so you could say they got it just right.
Also, I thought Left 4 Dead was a multiplayer game and hence couldn't really be too short?

That Half Life artwork picture at the top of the story looks interesting, what is Gordon massacring with the trusty crow bar?

PK!
