I am RMA'ing my old AX850 and can get either an RM1000X (worth less) or an AX860 as a replacement. I currently have a 290x and will either go CF 290x or all out 980 Tis.

Without a GPU my PC runs at about 140-160w from the wall. What's a better purchase consider I lose value (not physical money) when choosing to downgrade to the "lesser" RM1000X. The 1000x is only a few percentage worse in terms of efficiency, but I cannot find any other reason why it is inferior to the AX850.

RM1000X Pros:
More wattage (more headroom for OC)
Save about ~£30
Same resale value as AX860

AX860 Pros:
Tighter efficiency

Rm1000x

Scored a perfect 10 from JG, has a higher wattage just in case and now comes with a 10 year warranty. Personally I don't really care for all the extra gubbins if the AXi line maybe you do. The Rm1000x is also 2cm longer at 18cm. Might be important or not.

RMx is on a very solid platform. Great ripple suppression, great voltage regulation and love the fluid Dynamic fans on these new corsair units that run extremely quiet, and this if they even turn on as the fan profile themselves have been toned down.

Long story short, with your build, fan will not even spin so be no noise. I would pick the RMx over AX, even if the former cost more tbh.

There's a review of the RM1000X here and JG gave it a 10+.

There's a review of the AX860 here where Hardware Heaven gave it a 10.

The AX is overpriced simply because it's a Seasonic built unit. While they make excellent psu's for the most part, other oem's have caught them up and can equal or even beat them while selling at a lower price.

The RMx platform is proving to be a very good one and is getting excellent reviews across all of it's models. It's one of Corsair's best offerings that they have ever had while coming in at a decent price. Out of your choice of the two I would go for the RM1000x for the quality plus the extra headroom if you are going to go high end crossfire or SLI.

I'd probably go with the RM1000x if thinking about going crossfire, the AX860 would still do crossfire but I believe it would be getting close to the upper limit.

That count's for very little nowadays. The only guarantee from buying a Seasonic psu is a higher price. Other oem's have caught them up and in many cases overtaken them. If Seasonic are so good then why are they so tight with their warranties?
