Is it possible to downgrade from Vista to XP without formating the harddisk. My parents brought a laptop with Vista installed and it included a lot of applications. What i want to do is remove vista which is making the system run very slowly but keep the applications. In theory the application are on the CD supplied but only seem to be installled as part of a total reinstall of Visita.

No you cant do a downgrade to XP without wiping the drive.
What apps are they using? Can you get a free equivalent?
I'd probably suggest switching off some of Vista's unneeded stuff like Aero and all the visual crap which slows down your PC.
You can usually get performance back by tweaking the OS to your needs.
