I have a full x99 system at the moment but i'm only browsing the web and watching youtube videos so it's completely overkill and it's just wasted money.

I've thought about a laptop and hooking it up to my monitor (which i'll keep) as they are cheap enough now.

Any other options? I don't mind windows, iOS etc..

Cheers. :)

Something like a Surface?

You keep full Windows, can hook up to your monitor and use as a tablet also.
It may still be overkill.

Or if you really can't see yourself doing much work, get a chrome book? Nice and cheap and is perfect for browsing and YouTube. It's what it's built for.

Can hook it up to a monitor also.

Cheers all, tablet is not what i'm after but maybe a chromebook could be a good solution, also plenty of windows 7 laptops available.

I like the idea of the barebones system, i'll look into that a bit more. :)

But you already have the X99 system.

In terms of saving money, why is spending more on a cheaper downgrade, a better option than keeping what you have?

I haven't played a game in 2016 yet and it's just wasted money, I can get back close to 2k for the system if I split.

Perhaps consider your X99 system as a future investment. Given your usage, it'll likely still be good for purpose in ten years time (my last system lasted me 8 years with a GPU upgrade after 4, and I do a fair bit of gaming).

Laptops aren't good value for money for the performance you get, you pay for the form factor. If you're keeping your monitor anyway, you'll likely find a laptop and awkward solution. It might also be noisier than you bargained for when watching videos and the fans kick in.
