Need to get this room finished pronto. Lighting is what's stopping it all. We had talked about fitting Downlights with LED bulbs in a warm white with a dimmer.

Is this a good or bad idea.

Babies spend quite a lot of time laying on their backs and looking up at the ceiling. Try lying on your back with your eyes wide open directly under a lamp for a bit and see how comfortable it is :p

Babies rooms need soft / indirect dimmable lighting

Also consider now what you're going to do in terms of getting up to do night feeds - a dim nightlight is excellent for this, no need to turn any other lights on when getting up at night.

[Edit] We have a pair of these, one in the hallway and one in the kiddies bedroom. They are quite bright so have a strip of electrical tape around the bottom to reduce the light output - http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9829079.htm

Ha, I'm in the same boat...6 weeks to go and we have no flooring upstairs but need to get baby room sorted ASAP. We decided on LED for majority accept baby's room as they look up so much. Going for traditional shaded lamp in centre of room and a desk lamp

Need to do something with the lighting in there. Have a really nice LED Ikea stainless steel lamp for the corner of the room.

I'd do the downlights so they are not over head and they would be dimmed

You can get recessed anti glare down lights and then just don't place any directly above the cot / bed etc or adjustable and tilt them away

If thinking of using GU10 bulbs remember these can explode and blow hot glass everywhere etc, not ideal for kids room.

Also if dimming leds you will probably need a compatible low power dimmer switch depending on the total wattage

Probably easiest to just use a standard pendant fitting and lamp shade

Dimming is a must. Bright lights will wake the baby or add discomfort. Ours tend to be a sleep zombie, much likes myself, when feeding in the night and goes back to sleep easily but not if there are loud Moises or bright lights.

Personally as someone who is quite sensitive to bright lights I think downlights in any situation are the work of the devil!

For a babies room I would definitely not have them, indirect and dimmable lighting is definitely the thing to go for!!!

We have got down lights with dimmable LED lights. We have the daytime style lights also so nice white light.

Will try get some photos uploaded tonight to show you but I think they look great!

Is this a baby that is due or one already born and ond enough to sleep in their own room?

I ask this as Eleanor is now 13 weeks old and still sleeping in our room and will be for another 3 months as this is what is recommend, she is already sleeping throughout the night so night feeds are not a problem but a dimmable light whatever you choose is a must if you do eventually need to get up in the night for them and not disturb too much.
