Downlights layout help

Hi

I'm thinking of having led downlights fitted in the kitchen, however I don't know the best layout for the lights or which ones are best, I was looking at the hybrid 9 ones

The room layout is slightly L shaped

The work surfaces are 600mm, so would I need 4 lights in a square shape where it's narrower or could I get away with just two in line with the work surface?

4 in square bit, 3 along narrower bit. Don't skimp. Use dimmer. Buy / test ones of different colour temp - makes big difference.

Thanks Mel, Would that be 3 in a row in line with the work surface ? If so I was thinking that might look slightly odd in that the lights would be bunched closer together than the other half of the room. Where the room becomes narrow there is a beam that runs across the room as it was an extension.

The concern I have is that from the work surface to the wall is 1.1m so would there be enough light if I went with a single row?

I would go 6 at the fat end and 2 rows of 3 at the thin end but There isn't a lot of width. THe problem with one row could be you casting a shadow from a centre row of lights.

I'd personally have two rings some standard spots directly over the work surfaces and then another set of wider ones for general room illumination like this. Natural white for the kitchen (5000k colour temp)

Make sure to put lights over the counter top and not over the edge. Otherwise you will cast shadows over what you are doing! I think my lights are 500mm from the wall on 600mm deep counter tops.

Will the hob have a hood with lighting?

so there are companies out there (lighting companies) where if you give them your dimensions they can give you a plan of the lighting layout.

Joists are your biggest issue, you'll find the perfect layout then have to rethink it due to where the joists run.

Get some big wide led ones, they're much better than standard gu10 types for coverage and you can get them 12mm thick so joists aren't an issue, got a few of these around the house, you hardly notice them when they're off...
