Hey guys, I'm trying to spec up a machine that meets the following requirements as cheap as possible.

Will be used mainly as box that will sit in my room, used to queue downloads and storage for all my current files/media to be streamed by at least 2 other computers (and maybe the 360) around the house.

Want it to be quite as possible, not complain about being on 24/7 in a warm room, large amount of expandable storage space (raid?) and ofc at least a 1gb network port.

Just the box & OS (prob windows 7).

Cheers.

What kind of downloads?
You can install a bittorrent client on the Netgear ReadyNAS.

Not sure about quiet, I certainly wouldn't want it in my room when I was sleeping, but I do have an original ReadyNAS NV+ from before Netgear bought them, and I think things have improved a lot since then.

Remember, a constant droning fan noise can be slept through, a constantly clattering harddisk will drive you mad, so be wary if you try and make aPC too quiet without doing something about HDD noise.

I suppose basically at the moment my main machine is an old shuttle with an AMD XP64 3200, 2gib ram, ATI 800 XTPE agp.

Its far from quite, in fact after 4 years every component is actually at its last legs (when i brought the system it was best you could get for just over £1k).

Download = torrents, also on my too buy list is a new router (as the speedtouch at the moment does the job but its only 100mb base).

It's not a case of what it will be doing or getting a new shuttle barebones, re-use old componets or anything like that. Its honestly about time i started from scratch. I'm going to spend £1K on a shiny laptop (not involved in this thread) and I need a starting point for a 'server' hosting all my media, lets me play 'server' and can download 24/7 without disturbing sleep.

so, really I need a damn good motherborad (with on board raid and atleat 4-6 SATA ports), 2Gb ram, DVD reader, case which is quite and doesnt need much cooling (quite again), 1GB network port. Basically thats all i want. Don't care about GFx or shiny ****/
