My download speed has been ridiculous for a while, I'm supposed to be on 8mbps downloand and yet I can't get above 512. So I took the plunge and switched ISP and now I still cannot get above 512, I have a higher upload speed than my downloads, which is crazy! Below is a speed test I did 5 minutes ago. Can anyone gift me any tips on what may cause it or what I can do?

I'm using a Prestige 660HW-T1 Connecting Wirelessly too it, on desktop with a USB Dongle. not sure what stats you want but got everything I could see :p

Upstream Noise:
noise margin upstream: 9 db
output power downstream: 12 db
attenuation upstream: 11 db
Downstream Noise:
noise margin downstream: 10 db
output power upstream: 19 db
attenuation downstream: 17 db

Your line stats seem ok. Check on Samknows in the availability checker to see if you can actually get anything faster than 512kb as mentioned above.

BT ADSL broadband availability
You are connected to the Pevensey Marina telephone exchange.

ADSL is available in your area
Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services

According to BT Wholesale, your phone line should be able to support a 7Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.

Standard ADSL RAG results:
[BT ADSL Code: GEGEGEC] You can receive 2Mbps ADSL
[BT ADSL Code: GEGEGEC] You can receive 1Mbps ADSL
[BT ADSL Code: GEGEGEC] You can receive 512Kbps ADSL
[BT ADSL Code: GEGEGEC] You can receive 256Kbps ADSL

You are approximately 256 metres from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer!

It says so 7mbps, so ... :( Im stuck

Seems odd that you line is capped. Have you talked to IDNET support? There could be interference on your line, but your stats seem fine to me and at that distance from the exchange your speeds should be amazing. I notice your in Eastbourne. They are getting Be* at the end of this month so you could wait and switch to them and see if it makes a difference.

Also run a test at speedtester.bt.com and post the results as it will tell us your IP Profile.

Thanks for the help Nymins, just odne the test and this was the result:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 832 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 362 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.

Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

Is it the IP profile thats causing it, I'm not sure what that is!

If you get a problem on the line, they drop the linespeed until the problem goes away. Likewise, if the line is good, the speed is gradually increased over a week or so. In your case, it seems like there's an intermittent problem which is keeping the line speed low. try unplugging all the extensions for a week and see if it improves. Otherwise there may be a fault on the line.

Yep your IP Profile is stuck at 500. Contact IDNET about it and see if they can get BT you do something about it. Unfortunately it does take some time for BT to actually do anything as i have experienced it and continue to experience it. My IP Profile is stuck at 2000kbps and has been since last summer. Very annoying because its not my ISP's fault (ADSL24) and they try to help as much as they can, but its down to BT to get it sorted.

ADSL2+, which is used by Be*/o2, doesn't use the IP Profile system as much like ADSLMax does, so hopefully my problems will go away once i switch to them. I would recommend changing to them if you can once your exchange gets activated, because it will be much faster and more than likely cheaper than what you currently pay.

Tolien will be able to tell you more detail about ADSL2+ and how to help you now, but take a look at the sticky and see if theres anything there that can help you. But i would definitely get a hold of IDNET and see what they can do, because there is something up with the line.

Ok Ive had a word with Customer Services, which firstly Im very impressed with, free phone number, answered immediately, no press number 1 for this, blah blah and was a nice voice on the other end! But basically she said there's nothing they can do at the moment! She recommended to keep monitoring it for a couple of days if it doesn't go up then ring her again and then they'll prod BT a bit!

It's supposed to raise back up of it's own accord. I thought they changed it so it went back up within hours instead of the 3 days it seems to take :confused:
I think Tolien explained once how they can get stuck, but I would have thought all the kinks would have been worked out by now.

I think your line needs to stay at a constant sync for the IP Profile to go back to its normal state. The problem with my family is that they like to turn the router off at night, so the next time its switched on it needs to resync again, which means the count (cant really think of a better word for time it takes) is reset for the profile to go back to normal. hard to explain, but yea Tolien is better at this :)

Taken from the UKFSN website:

Sync Rate -> BRAS Profile

* under 288K -> 160K
* 288K -> 250k
* 576K -> 500K
* 1152K -> 1000K
* 1728K -> 1500K
* 2272K -> 2000K
* 2848K -> 2500K
* 3424K -> 3000K
* 4000K -> 3500K
* 4544K -> 4000K
* 5120K -> 4500K
* 5696K -> 5000K
* 6240K -> 5500K
* 6816K -> 6000K
* 7392K -> 6500K
* 7968K -> 7000K
* 8128K -> 7150K

"Note that when your line sync rate drops BT will set the new profile speed accordingly within minutes however rises in the sync rate will not cause a rise in the profile speed until the higher sync rate has been stable for at least 3 days."

Your line must be changing sync a lot and not being stable. Do you turn your router off at times?

I'll wait until BT's closing hours, I'll give it until 6 and see if anything changes! Thanks for the help guys, I really don't know anything when it comes to the stats and tiny things with adsl!

have you tried running a speed test connected directly to your modem?

(apologies if you have done this already, im just assuming you are using wireless)
