Download speed halved since going wireless

This isn't really a major problem, for all intents and purposes the speed is probably good enough but this is just bugging me. Basically we've had to switch from a wired Netgear DG834 to the wireless equivalent (DG834G) using a couple of the Linksys WMP55AG adapters, everything is set up and working fine with the only niggle being that our max download speed never exceeds about 300kb/s whereas before we'd get anything up to 800kb/s, upload speeds seem to be the same (about 35kb/s before the net starts slowing to a crawl in response).

Does anyone have any ideas of settings I might've missed? I've done a few searches on here and Google and not turned anything up that I've overlooked.

Thanks :)

It's generally on good/very good but occasionally dropping to low, it seems to behave the same irrespective of that though. It's the same story with the PC that's on the floor above the router and the one that's only a few feet away from it, I tried someone's laptop to see if it was something to do with the cards but there wasn't any difference to speak of there either.

What's it like transferring files within the network - ideally with the nearest machine connected with a cable. Have you tried downloading from the internet while using a cable?

I haven't - it was a bit of a song and dance connecting the router up with cables for the initial setup what with the awkward positions of the various plugs in relation to the PC but I'll give that a try next.
