Download speed problem

Hi guys. I have small issue with my downloads. My internet speed is 50mb (usually around 56mb) but when I try to download it's starting to download around 6mb/s then slowly drops to 100kb/s and raise again to 6mb/s and drops again , it's constantly like that. Also often I can't connect to internet at all. Any ideas why is like that? Thanks
 
Wired or Wireless?
Changed cable if its wired?
Any other devices having this issue?
Looked for a driver update?

Bit more information would be useful :) where you are trying to download from?
 
Wired on pc and same problem on phone/tablet .I did try to change cable , didn't help .I use uTorrent mostly but also when I download games from Steam or Origin it's same . If u need more info ask . Thank you
 
I just done it but its still not working properly. I was wondering maybe its router be itself causing problem . I did change the router not long time ago and then that issue appears. Do u think if I call virgin they will be able to help me with that?
 
Do you have the virgin superhub in modem mode?

Try putting it back to the router and see what happens with the speeds, will determine if its the new router or not.
 
when you changed the router did you change the plug/psu as well or are you using the old psu for the new bit of kit?

If there was a dedicated plug/psu that came with the new router use that one with it,even if it means going through the tangle of cables to the back of the cabinet or whatever.

Is uTorrent uploading at the same time? While downloading on it or Steam.

We recently dropped from 150mb to 50mb and i find that the ridiculously low upload on that package chokes everything else when it's used, especially when upload is throttled during peak times.
 
I done the reset and checked the settings and it's in router mode . I never download from steam and utorrent same time. I'm using psu which I get with router . All this didn't change nothing. Last night I was downloading Wolfenstein New Order and it was again this same , starts at 6mb/s drops to 50kb/s and again going up to 6mb/s and drops, and all over again . Instead of downloading something in 2hrs it's take 20hrs.
 
If you do a speedtest from speedtest.net what speed do you get? Is it only uTorrent and Steam/Origin you have problems with?

I occasionally have problems with steam as Virgin seem to throttle it back.

PC (wired) Ping:7ms Download:54.70Mbps Upload:1.80Mbps
Phone (wireless) Ping:49ms Download:53.02Mbps Upload:2.59Mbps
I have that problem mostly on uTorrent and Steam/Origin , but time to time I can't connect to Internet at all , or it's take up to 5 mins to load website . But sometimes it's working without problems and loading sides in less than sec . Downloading is never changing , I always have that weird jumps .
 
if it's intermittent like that I would have to think that it's a bad electrical connection somewhere,have you got a different router you can try to see if the issue persists?
