I don't know about Leopard but in Tiger I had to download a program to stop my MacBook going into standby. I think it is disabled by default because it causes cooling issues.

I run my Macbook with the lid closed most of the time. I have an external Screen, Keyboard and Mouse.
When you close the lid, the macbook goes into standby. To wake it up with the lid closed I have to click the keyboard or mouse, and then its working.

I presume this is the same for the MacbookPro.

another way is with the lid shut hold play down on the apple remote, the machine will wake itself up then and download :)

Just up the speed of the fans and you should be alright.

to be honest, I can't even think of an instance that I'd want to run it with the lid closed. The only time it's closed, I'm taking it somewhere and chances are it doesn't have a wireless connection (that I can access) so there's not a lot of point!
