well i downloaded a file which i think is an xvid file (is that a real file name) because of its name but i might be wrong.

Its 336mb but when trying to view it its only 3 seconds long and says i can't view the file unless i download a program to watch it from such and such.

Surely the place it wants me to get the program from is just going to give me a virus but im wondering is there a way i can watch whats on the file or is the 3 second clip likely to be all there is?

You don't need a player, you can just download the xvid codec.

I'm suprised you haven't heard of it. It's a very popular format.

Vlc media player and media player classic will also play the video.

The reason it's reporting it as 3 seconds is likely because it doesn't understand the format.

No, he does.

It's what you get when you download certain episodes of a certain program from a certain reject.

Download a proper version next time. :)

Unless, ofc, you want the spyware and other crap that comes with that player. :o
