Downloading Games you Allready Own

I know downloading games is illegal, but if you already own the content you are downloading, just in a different format, is it still illegal?

What are your opinions on this ethically? In my opinion I believe it be fine, as you have already purchased a copy of the game, you just require it in a different format/media.

Surly when I bought the game, I bought a license to use the content, and the content is the same no matter what format it’s for, or media it’s stored on.

The reason I ask is, my TV recently broke and my PC is bran new (custom built: high specification), being a student I rarely watch TV and could easily live without one. I only use the TV for the Xbox. I watch DVDs/Listen to Music/Play PC Games on my PC; I don’t think it would be appropriate to shell out quite a bit of money for a new TV.

I think downloading the game if you already own it should be ok, but by downloading through bit torrent etc you're actually helping it grow, hence are breaking the law. If it's simply downloading, not peering to others, then I don't see why it should be illegal.

As far as I understand it, it's illegal even if you own the game, and is only okay once the publisher gives the go-ahead to allow the game to be distrubuted as freeware/abandonware etc.

It's a debate had many a time on here, and will never be settled, and this thread will be locked deleted I imagine.

Didnt think the thread would be against the rules, as i m not asking for download links or anything, just a discussion on the ethics and to clarify where i stand with the law.

I take it you are on about downloading PC versions of Xbox games you have.

Actually now I've re-read the initial post you seem to be right, and I agree. Definitely not legal.

I'm 99.999% certain that having paid for a copy of the Xbox version it does not entitle you to also download the PC version and play it for free as well.
