Hi All,

I have a question regarding large downloads if anyone can help.

I have BT Broadband and regularly download from newsgroups using DAP (Download accelerator).

I have an 8 MB connection but for some reason i can only acheive this speed if i download a number of files. i.e. If i want to download 1 single file it will only allow me to download it at around 200kb/sec. This is the same regardless if i use DAP or not.

To download at 800kb/sec, i would have to simultaneously download around 6 files.

Does this makes sense to anyone, and if so, should i be able to download 1 single file at 800kb/sec?

Something, either BT or the news server, is limiting the speed of each connection. The fact that you can run multiple connections is good but ultimately the performance you get will depend on how your software can cope with those connections. I'm not familiar with DAP so can't comment directly but most decent news clients will use multiple connections to download multi-part messages in parallel. When you talk about single files is that single a single nzb or a single article?

I also am on BT, but dont have the full 8mb connection.

They only give me about 5Mb's.

I can prob download 1 file from a website about 400kbs maybe and drops slowly.

www.speedtester.bt.com put your details in and check you IP profile after the tests have completed :)

might still be capped at 200k

you if it is capped at 200k you can call your ISP and get them to raise the IP profile up to 8mb and your line will then find a MSR ( max stable rate )
