Downloading WoW

Is it possible to download WoW from Blizzard and purchase the game through them? ie like Steam or Anarchy Online?

i got mine on 4 and thats the pc and mac versions in one package. Boxed edition as well.

Only a couple of gigabytes, not ridiculous at all by today's standards (compared with HL2 or Everquest 2 which can be downloaded). The US Fileplanet trial of WoW (when it was around) involved a download of the full WoW client.

edit: Mine was on 5CDs too, I think it included up to a later patch which must have increased the file size somewhat.

For the trial on Fileplanet you need to download the full client, which IIRC is about 5GB.

I'm not sure if, after your trial, you can buy online and use the same client though, you would have to email and ask blizzard, plus you'd be on the US servers.

I know you need a cd-key to register a full account, which is normally located in the case you buy it in.

I downloaded the WoW beta (4.7Gb) - took a couple of days though, I only had 512k broadband back then.

But to answer the question - No, you can't download it - you must buy the box.

Newer boxes have a 5th CD with a patch on it.

So you paid £30 for a game that you never played? Or did you find someone to borrow a less broken CD from? :S

i had it installed, played it for a week, formatted HDD, then went to remove cd fromcase, snapped it never bothered with it again

shockingly poor game imo - i prefer other genres though

its £9 a month

but still, blizzard have to pay for the servers etc, and theres loads and i mean loads of them, probs 20 for like english, french, german and then againf or the us. So thats 80 servers or something, some get very full so need powerful server, which is gonna start costing a lot
