little bit of a long one but bear with me :) I've been using Downsampling on my GPU since I got it because I'm too skint to upgrade to a nice new monitor just yet. Currently I'm using a 720p screen (1360x768) and running all my games @ 1920x1080 , they all look better and most 99% of my games run above 60fps so all is well there. BF4 is another matter, I was hoping for ultra @ 60fps but currently have lower.

found this calculation online:

At 720p your PC would run higher than that (possibly 100+ fps)

Using a 720p monitor and downsampling from 1080 would yield what as your downsampled framerate? (ugh math)

1080/720 = 1.5

1920/1280 = 1.5

1/(1.5 + 1.5) = 1/3 so a 33% loss of FPS 60-19.8 = 40.2FPS on the downsampled game."

Ok great I knew downsampling had a performance hit and have not been that worried about it. My actual question though is if I upgraded to a 1080p screen assuming I went from 720p res>1080p res what would the performance hit be roughly? and would my FPS increase at all over running downsampling :confused:
 
You mean you are letting your monitor downscale them?

If so that won't ever look better. Native res 1:1 pixel mapped always looks better than anything else.

For instance, my old 50" Plasma accepted 1080p signals but the native resolution was 1366x768.

No contest, setting games at 1366x768 always looked far better than using 1080p.

Just checking as have been dealing with tards all day on Battlelog forums wondering why BF4 looks like crap at 25% resolution scaling :D

no worries, just checking. I know my question is a little confusing :) ps. resolution scaling on BF4 can anyone explain it, maybe thats the cause of my FPS drop more than downscaling (Had it set @ 145% now its 120% and gave me more FPS) its possible with downscaling active I only need it at 100%?
 
Yeah with downscaling active you should only need 100%

It's effectively the same thing. Anything above 100% is rendering at a higher resolution and downsampling.

It's basically a supersampling slider. I tried 200% on my R9 290x and it looked amazing but didn't run brilliantly. Great for crossfire users though with 1080p screens!
 
Nice I shall give it a play around, but certainly seems the way to go thank you. Been trying to get an answer on that slider all morning :D
 
Incidently some guy was trying to claim he can run BF4 at 1080p Ultra with 170% resolution scaling at 100 fps on an AMD 7970! Heh.

I didn't have an overlay but when I tried the single player campaign at 1080p Ultra with 200% resolution scaling it looked to be about 25-30 fps.
 
Just render it at 720 with 4xAA that will look better than down-sampling and give you better fps surely??

nope down-sample will still look 100x better, certainly not better fps but comparable and nothing major (I expect to be at 60FPS avg eventually after tweaking ^^)

Why does downsampling from 1080p to 720p look better than just rendering at 720p?

(I'm just interested - know nothing about this stuff)
 
basically because with down-sampling you are rendering more pixels for the image (1.5x more from 720p>1080p) then scaling that down to your resolution you end up with a crisper and less aliased image. Things look sharper and more detailed

thats as far as I really understand the voodoo magic that is down-sampling


tried setting resolution scale to 100%, totally increased my FPS loads. Still not perfect for me, but a few tweaks and it'll be golden. using 4XMSAA now too!

Confused. Why don't you run at native res and an resolution scale 150, no AA. That was you're getting your supersampling direct in game.
