I have a friend who is tempted to ***** large amounts of cash on some Dr Dre Beats headphones. I believe this is a terrible idea based on the fact I've used some and they were crap, and have tried to talk him out of it, but have no idea what to recommend as an alternative.

What woukd you fine fellows recommend? Sennheiser? Budget would be around 150 squids.

Cheers

A lot of the good headphones don't have this street cred nonsense. So if he wants to buy Dr Dre phones because they look cool, then you're going to have a hard time convincing him to buy from a good headphones manufacturer, because Sennheiser etc, place sound quality above looks.

I'd say for portable use, Sennheiser HD25's would be ideal at about £140. They might not look fancy, but they will run rings around anything with Dr Dre's name slapped on them. Depends if he is willing to place sound quality above looks. If not, then just let him buy the Dr Dre's.

Cheers Marsman. He is only 13, but hopefully will be swayed by quality over gimmicks!

HD25s the way forward in that price bracket then?

YES.

HD25-1 II to be precise. So good i have 2 pairs. Best headphones i've used for portable use, ever.

If he still is wanting the look, take a peek at the V-MODA CrossFade M-80.

They look pretty different and are very well rated for the money, which is in budget.

Check out the reviews.

Denon AHD1100, I have a pair and they have a huge amount of bass if thats one of the reasons he wants beats.

They're not the most durable headphones so maybe not the most portable but you won't look ridiculous wearing them if you do want to use them in public. The styling is quite tasteful.

Wasting your time if he is 13, just like trying to get him to listen to decent music lol. My nephew is the same and saved up for the dre beats, its clearly just a bit of a fashion accessory, schoolkids are into chav these days lol.

Being asked to get them for Christmas, I think it is an waste if money so thanks for the recommendations I will try and make him see sense.

Have to agree. On average, 13 is too young to appreciate better sound quality to be had from better headphones. That's not to say that will apply to all kids that age, but most will be too easily swayed by what looks cool and what is used by celebrity X. Look how many swimmers walked into the pool wearing Dr Dre headphones at the Olympics. I cringed when I saw so many wearing them. Forget that they are paid to wear them. Kids and impressionable people will just think wow! Michael Phelps uses Dr Dre headphones. That's it, you can forget about trying to convince them to buy good sounding headphones.

All you can do is inform. If the person decides to go with something because it looks cool over something that sounds better well that's their choice.

It's his Christmas money he'll be spending, and surprisingly for a 13 year old actually takes advice on board! Thanks for the suggestions :-)

Incidentally, I'll be needing some new headphones myself soon as my old Creatives are dying a death. Are the headphones mentioned a good shout for Xbox and general music for inside too, or should I be looking at something else?

Depends what you want to spend. TBH, I'd not really want to use HD25's for gaming, but it depends what the main use will be. If it's gaming, then I'd look at something else. If you're buying them primarily for music, then it would make sense to buy something to use for gaming as well.

I'd be mainly using them for gaming yeah. I'll need to find or build a decent optical headphone amp too as the one I have has some serious hiss going on.

Let him buy Beats, realise his mistake and cry.

In all honesty though, Beats arent that bad, I have a set of Solo's and would recommend them to friends, infact, most of my friends now own Beats of some kind because they tried mine.

Not the best on the market and way over priced, but I like them (and no Im not a chav/ hipster).
