Hey,

Looking to upgrade our PowerEdge 840 so i can acess and support it when im away. Looking on the Dell site it seems they only officialy support the DRAC 4/p, but i was wondering are there any physical differences between the two? I mean if the two cards are essiently the same boards, with different firmware / features, can i just get a DRAC 5? What slots does the DRAC require?

Also, any comments on how decent these cards actually are?

Cheers

They are alright, we haven't had to use ours yet *touches wood*

Its been a while since I actually fitted our DRAC5 but Im fairly sure it has its own special port on the motherboard where you connect it to the motherboard via a ribbon cable.

Call Dell to clarify (also they won't sell you a DRAC4, too old, you'll need to use servicesource or similar). I'm pretty sure that the 8th gen poweredges use DRAC4's. With both the 4's and 5's you can remote console, power on/off and cycle etc etc and I'm not aware of them being radicaly different.
Not complicated to setup either and have got me out of trouble on more than one occassion - never buy a server without one now.

iDRAC6 is Dell's incarnation of iLO - the clue is in the i part ;)

That card is the only one which you can fit without invalidating your warranty.

Obviously you can fit whatever you like to the server, but unless it's recognised under their parts configuration on the website, it won't be covered by the warranty.
Assuming you do go down this path; if you call an engineer out to repair the server, make sure you whip out the DRAC card, otherwise it will invalidate your warranty. :)
