Hi all

I'm a bit behind on gaming (too busy nowadays) but I picked up Dragon Age: Origins at the start of this year when it was on offer and really enjoyed it. I've read all the negative stuff about DA2, but now that it's gone down to a low price (can pick it up for £9 new, or £35 on eBay :p) is it worth it?

Is it really as monotonous as people make it out to be? How different is it to DA:O in terms of gameplay mechanics?

Thanks :)

I found it worth it.

Dragon Age 2 compared to Dragon Age: Origins is a lot more... best word I can think of is "arcadey". That's not really in a bad way, it plays more like a Mass Effect game in comparison to DA:O which is much more slower / tactical. I didn't find it monotonous and found the story to be quite good although preferred DA:O's story. I didn't like the characters in DA2 as much as I did the ones from DA:O and I think their development throughout the game was worse. The linearity of DA2 was a bit disappointing though as there's very little in terms of exploration; granted DA:O wasn't amazing from it but instead of BioWare making it more open they made it less open kinda like how they went from Mass Effect 1 to 2.

It's definitely worth £9 though, just don't expect more of the same when moving from DA:O to DA2 as although they share similarities they play completely different. If you wanted you could also try the demo from BioWare's site before you buy.

I enjoyed the demo for da2 but I'm not a fan of da origins as its too slow paced.

I welcomed the change of pace but a lot of origins fans say its too simplified.

I didn't find it a disaster as some have mentioned but more of a disappointment. It did get better and i found myself quite enjoying it as i played on, stopped comparing it to the first one and the story started to come together.

To sum up i think flibby's post up a few from this one is bang on and yes i would shell out nine quid for it too, i think it is worth that imho.

Aha from the advice I shall wait for the price to drop then! I knew that it wouldn't be the same, but I was sort-of hoping for "more of the same". If work becomes tricky then I'll pick it up in the next few weeks - amazing that people buy it from eBay when it's so expensive on there compared to other online shops (this is probably the "eBay effect" - if it's on there, then it must be cheap).

Demo isn't really an option as I have a capped internet usage unfortunately. Time to dig out the N64 for a while to pass the time I think :p

It's not a bad game in itself, but it's really unlike DA1 and that's the problem most have with it. At £9 it's worth it, but remember apart from the universe it's got not a lot in common with the first game.

Imo it is not worth more than a tenner, it might be worth considering for £9 but try not to think too much about DAO because it is not in the same league.
I thought the game was a disaster tbh, every single aspect is inferior to DAO apart from the graphical side of it obviously, and the story is appalling imo.
Also the amount of recycled loctions is almost unbelievable.

(i am usually very easily pleased with games and tend not to be overly critical really, so for me to have such a dislike for this game it must be bad)

You have to see it to believe it!

It has 1 cave in the entire game. Which gets blocked off at points and reused to the point that it will sicken you.
To call it dumbed down is an understatement. The story isn't anything special.
Yet to convince myself to try legacy.

Worth a fiver at most.

Actually I enjoyed DA2 a lot more then DA1, I loved the characters more then in DA2 and I felt the story line was tighter. Mind you the witcher 2 blows that away !

Yes, it's worth it. The story was a disappointment, environment re-use feels cheap and you will be annoyed at the lack of control you have over events, but I thought the characters were even better then the first game (which is what I play Bioware games for), the combat was an improvement, and the DLC is a clear step up.

As always, though, you mileage may vary.

1. do you like fantasy rpgs?
2. do you like action games
3. would you like a hybrid of the two?

if so its worth a purchase now especially since you can pick it up cheap

Theres a simple explanation for that.

DA:O was a slower paced more tactical RPG. DA2 was practically a hack n slash action RPG masquerading as a more traditional RPG. Witcher 2 is more of an action RPG.

So despite the fact DA2 was an abortion of a game that isn't superior to DA:O in any way, shape or form, you just didn't really like the style of the game. As for the story being tighter? Lol.
