DRAM Freq way too low?!

Hey Guys,

Just recently bought this

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-274-OK&groupid=43&catid=1444&subcat=

And have noticed it's really not running how it should be with certain games (i've been comparing mine to my mates running same Graphics Card and a Q6600 overclocked to 3.2GHz). The difference is staggering - he gets double the framerates I do on some games.

I've run up CPUZ and it mentions that the DRAM Freq is 573.1MHz when I have this ram: Corsair CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 (1600MHz).

Does the DRAM Freq that is shown within CPUZ (memory tab) get multiplied up?

Cheers for any help guys,

G

Yes, it's Double Data Rate so your memory is running at 1146mhz. Memory speed should not affect FPS. What is the full system specs of your friend's PC? What games are these? What resolution do you play on, and that he plays on?

I'm playing Blackops and SC2 at the moment. He has this

http://3dmark.com/3dm06/15137709

Which is a Q6600, with 8Gbs of RAM (we both have Windows 7 64 Bit ultimate) and both have 5870s.

We are both playing on 1920*1080 - max settings on everything. He doesn't drop below 75fps, mine struggles to get that high and with explosions and stuff happening it drops to about 30.

I've enabled seta r_multithreading 1 so the logical cores should come into effect. But that setting doesn't seem to make any difference. I'm thinking it might be a my lack of ram (4Gb) or that I'm missing something?

I've tried different drivers but no use as of yet.

Any ideas?

Does it happen when you're playing online or offline?
If your both playing online, it could be the internet affecting it.
Have you checked your CPU and GPU are running at full speeds when playing?

So sc2 is fine?
Might be because Black Ops is a console port, so it's not effective using your PC as well as your friends who is using older tech. Not sure on this though, can't see what else could cause the problem.

If you look at this comparison graph for different CPUs in black ops (using a 5970, so it is just the CPUs limiting performance), a stock Q6600 (2.4Ghz) beats a stock i3 540 (3.07GHz) by 26% for average framerate and 30% for minimum framerate. Obviously, both of your CPUs are overclocked - but you would still expect a 3.2GHz Q6600 to beat a 4.2GHz i3 in this game (the % overclock is very close), he simply has more cores to play with.

However, it must be noted that COD:BO is a console port that doesn't seem to have been done very well - it is very CPU heavy, while other games that look and play better than it only need a fraction of the computing power to run well. When you run these games i'm certain your system will run them very well.

Cheers for the follow ups guys, I had seen that graph before but I thought potentially the r_multithreaded 1 setting hadn't been used so BlackOps was ignoring the other cores, but this might not be the case.

As you say it might be because it's a port, and it's CPU intensive. You don't think that the Underclock of the RAM is causing a problem?

Any reason why it would be low? Is it worth me trying to fix it?

I wouldn't worry - it was probably set by the OCUKers to ensure that the overclock was stable. I wouldn't mess with it if I were you - it won't yield any more performance in games (Dual channel DDR3 @ 1033MHz provides a serious amount of bandwidth) and may throw off your OC.

Even at best, black ops is a rather buggy game, with the system in sig, (highly clocked sli gtx 470's) it plays very poorly, fps reads very high, but its very stuttery and gpu use rarely gets above 40%. MW2 plays a lot better, as do the other games im running, bad company 2 and moh.
