Hi all

I'm at 170lbs (5'10") and I want to get down to 165 in 5 weeks with minimal cardio (1/2 hr cycling 5 days per week).

I've been looking at the South Beach diet as a (very) short term measure. Forgetting the buzzwords for a second, it basically suggests eating minimal carbs and good fats, all low GI food, as opposed to Atkin's, which is basically no carbs but any fat you like.

Who's tried this and does anyone have any opinions on me trying this to shed the last bit of tummy fat before I go on hol?

Let me say as a form of disclaimer, that I know that such diets are not healthy in the long term. I've been eating properly for a year now, by which I mean cutting out sugar, crisps and reducing booze and replacing 'white' carbs with wholemeal bread, wild rice etc. I'm looking for some extremely dramatic fat losses in a month, simple as that.

Why is cardio rare?

I've been trying to cut from ~205lbs to 185 in a ~3 weeks without loosing muscle and have pretty much been living on protein, good fats, fruit and veg. I give myself a free meal once a week where I can eat what I like. The progress seems to be going good but I've also added in a lot of extra cardio to my routines to shift the fat. I can't comment on the effectiveness of the diet alone.

If you can fit in 30 mins cycling, do it HIIT style - it'll help massively I imagine.

It seems silly to try and do it through food alone if you can help out with exercise too - stuff like doing cardio first thing in the morning before eating and suchlike too.

Dave palumbo keto diet, no point though if you're going on holiday afterwards and gonna go off it just stick with low GI carbs, good fats and adequate amount protein.

Get very drunk... I could drop 5lbs in 2 days max hah. I obviously don't reccomend it but you did say 'drastic' :p

Getting smashed gets me so dehydrated it's unreal! I can easily see 4-5 litres of water in and not need to pee.

Might try it at the end of my next cut! Get completely legless and then dump 500grams of carbs in and wake up completely peeled :p

I don't know about you but I don't think I could lose 5lbs through diet alone in 5 weeks; I've lost 4lbs in 3 weeks through hard cardio day in day out and cutting all the uneeded crap from my diet. I'm 158lbs down from 162, though, and about an inch taller than you.

For anyone interested, my tactics are as follows.

I'm all but eliminating carbs from my diet.

Brekkie: omelette + bacon + protein shake.
Snack: chicken breast + broccoli.
Lunch: tuna salad.
Afternoon: protein shake.
Dinner: salmon or steak or chicken, plus broccoli, asparagus (does this make anyone else's urine absolutely stink??), salad, etc.

Plus loads of water and 1hr extra cardio every other day.

Gonna be difficult to completely eliminate the beers with the World Cup, but needs must.

asparagus (does this make anyone else's urine absolutely stink??),

It makes everyones urine stink. interestingly only 50% of people can smell the stinky compound though, so those who say it doesn't just cant smell it.

Actually not everyone can break it down into the stinky compounds, a little over 50% funnily enough ;)

Ant

whether my percantage is bang on I am willing to concede, but I still stand by my point that all make the smell, but not all can perceive the smell, both from what I've read on it and on the fact my fiancee thinks hers dont smell, but I sure as hell know when she has eaten asparagus if she goes to the toilet before me :D
