I personally wouldnt use this but corel draw is another option
Corel Painter would be better than draw. Have had a play on it, and while it's a very good package for creating realistic looking natual-media effects, I didn't find it to be particularly responsive on my machine for some of the brush styles. Worth checking out though.

The Gimp will work with a tablet perfectly, just depends whether your system will recognise the tablet or not (much more tricky on linux). I use the Gimp a lot, and it's much more powerful than it might appear. Still... Photoshop does rule for all round graphics work.

Spanker (or anyone really) how you finding using a graphics tablet?

Was looking at getting a Wacom A5 in January.
use photoshop/Illustrator a lot for my course and in general, im not that good at drawing by hand on paper but its a pain in the ass to draw something and scan it in etc. Using the pencil/line tools in the software can also be a bit messy with a mouse, is the graphics tablet more suited to drawing than a mouse(obviously but is it easier/more practical), and how easy/difficult is it compared to pencil and paper?

Love using a tablet. I use a fairly old A5 Graphire, and it suits me just right. Don't feel I need a larger space. The only issue I sometimes find is the lack of really delicate pressure sensitivity in the Graphire, and the lower resolution occasionally shows itself when trying to draw faster, smoother strokes.

Yes, it is more suited to drawing than with a mouse. Certainly it's more natural and intuitive. Though I do find it really shines when doing tedious work like cleaning up images, or creating a mask around a subject where you need to carefully erase around the edges of an image. Sometimes it's easier just to use a mouse, as it can be a bit fiddly to use a program's interface (especially click-hold to select button-dropdown menus) with a pen, but for the most part a pen will be first call when you fire up your graphics package.

Compared to pencil/paper? I'd say it's not as easy, and a completely different feel. With the nib I have on my pen, the surface is very smooth and lacks any real friction that you get with a pencil and paper. Thus, drawing a straight line can be pretty tricky, and tends to be a bit wobbly as the nib slips on the surface. I believe there are some better nibs (like felt-tip) that make it better in that regard. It is easier to clean up and rectify mistakes - though that's not directly through using a pen, more just through using a graphics package. Once you get used to the feel, however, it's quite easy to just sketch a rough image out, and is much quicker to do than using a mouse. I still use pencil and paper when sketching out a comp etc.

That said, I don't really use it for proper drawing/painting, the majority of work is simple stuff like creating graphics for the web, and cleaning up images. Though I'm currently working on this in The Gimp with the Graphire.

:)

I bought a wacom intuos3 a couple months ago, and it's awesome :)

Comes with a selection of nibs for different feels, including a spring loaded one for a brush effect, which scarily works and feels like a brush :)

Using GIMP on Linux. The support is a bit shaky, but it works just fine once up and running.

The main difficulty I found with a tablet vs pen + paper, is the slight but significant difference that you are not directly drawing. Part of that is the odd feeling of not looking at your hand/the tip of the pen when drawing, the other is getting your tablet in a comfotable postion that is aligned (i.e. the angle)

I have the old intuos 2 and its great, it takes a few mins to get used to but then it feels very natural, great for drawing.
Some things you just cant do with a mouse like detailing work and this is where the tablet shines.
