Drawing software!

Does anyone know of any software thats a bit like paint but better?
Its just that ive started my dissertation and I need to draw some basic sections like through walls etc and loading diagrams and I was wondering if theres any software thats better than paint to do these on so I can put them in my word document?

I think you can also do 2D stuff on Google Sketch-up http://sketchup.google.com/#utm_campaign=en&utm_source=en-ha-ww-google&utm_medium=ha&utm_term=google%20sketchup

If you're after technical diagrams then MS Visio is what you want
