Hi all just a quick question...

If I do a firmware upgrade on my Draytek 2820n routers at work, is it likely to wipe them back to factory or does it literally just upgrade firmware and leave everything else in place?

Don't want to upgrade anything then lose a bunch of settings for port forwards, open ports, VPN's etc!

Your best best it do a backup of the routers settings first, should be able to back up the config easy enough. Then when you upgrade if it goes wrong you can put the config back in?

The download comes with 2 versions, an .all and a .rst ... I seem to remember the .rst resets back to factory.

Do a backup of the config just in case. I've also done these remotely but I'd rather not if I could help it! ha

Always do a config backup from the admin back end, before updating any firmware. Also make sure your machine is cabled into the router not connected over Wi-Fi.

as others have said, .rst clears the settings back to factory defaults.

If you're updating from an older firmware i.e. 3.3.4 or earlier then download and upgrade to 3.3.5.2 before upgrading to 3.3.7.3, otherwise your config might not work with the newest firmware (they made a lot of changes to how the firewall works)

It's safe but not ideal to update the firmware remotely - if you do have to do it remotely then see if you can remotely access a pc local to the router and update via the web interface from that PC. much quicker and safer than sending it over the internet or a VPN.

Backup > upgrade firmware > factory reset > restore settings from backup

Although if you upgrading due to an issue you can carry that issue over in a settings backup and restore

Just curious but if your going to do it that way and restore the backup, why not just use the firmware that keeps the settings?
