I have just replaced a flaky Netgear modem/router with a Vigor 120 modem and a Netgear WDNR3700 router.

The combination is working perfectly so far.

My only question is if there is any way to access the Vigor's config/web pages from a PC which is connected through the router. I am not convinced this is possible. I am fairly sure the Vigor doesn't have an IP address in this configuration which makes it difficut to connect to !

I only want to see what has happens to my ADSL sync rates out of curiosity compared to my old modem.

Any ideas ?

We use these at work, they are literally just a modem and we have Fortigate firewalls that have all the adsl details.

We also had problems with them disconnecting and we had to keep turning them off and on again. Since we upgraded to the new firmware they have been fine.

Well I had already had a look at the manual and the example they give shows the modem directly connected to a PC and not through a router so hen ce my question.

From the info in the manual and the support site they mention a web interface at 192.168.2.1 but how can I get at that through the router? Don't believe it can be done.

I expect I could connect directly to the 120 by configuring a PC's network to connect via PPPoE (this does appear to be documented in the manual).

Well I gave it a try and connected directly to it via PPPoE and it the 120 assigns me a DHCP address and I can get at the config info at 192.168.2.1.

It shows me the info I want which is great. Slightly inconvenient in that I have to pull cables in and out but at least I can do it. Would be nice to be able to do it through the router but can't see how that would be possible.

Same issue as me! Would some clever static routing sort it?

My setup is probably familiar to you guys given that this is a DrayTek forum, but I thought I'd include a diagram incase of need :).

I'm on O2 ADSL2+ LLU (G.992.5 annex A) with a Dynamic IP, and set up Vigor 120 as per the guide online. It's plugged into a Vigor 2920n Router, which is set to Dynamic IP. It all works fine .

Vigor 120 IP: 192.168.2.1 (its default)
Vigor 2920n IP: 192.168.1.1 (its default)
PC IP: 192.168.1.*** (DHCP)

However to access the Vigor 120 (mainly to check the line stats) it's a bit of a faff. I have to unplug the 120 from the 2920n (thus removing that WAN link from use) and plug it directly into a PC (thus removing the PC from using the network). Then I set the PC to a static IP of 192.168.2.11 rather than using DHCP, otherwise it ends up being DHCP'd my public IP.
Then I can browse to 192.168.1.1 and use the GUI menus or telnet into it and get the line stats.
Whilst I'm checking the line stats no-one use the line, as the 120 isn't connected to the 2920n for others to use it and my PC can only use the line if I let the 120 give it the public IP address (but then the PC can't get to the 120's GUI or Telnet).

This is obviously less than ideal, but admittedly works.

Is there anything I can do make this less of a faff? Ideally I'd want either to telnet straight into the 120 from a regular LAN PC whilst others are still using the 120's internet link, or a way of the 2920n showing the Sync Speed/Attenuation/SNR in it's GUI.

Any suggestions and ideas appreciated :). I genuinely don't have a clue how, or even if, it's possible!

Cheers,

<slaps head>

We use them with SonicWall and have had similar problems - I've no idea why I didn't check for a new firmware for the 120s :o:rolleyes:

The downside of the 120s against the older 100/110 model is at least they had 4 ports so you could grab line stats without having to kill an active link.

Think I've got an old Vigor 100 in the loft somewhere!

<Thinking outloud>

Would it be possible to put a basic unmanaged switch between the Vigor 120 and the router (or SonicWall in your case). My thinking is that the Vigor 120 will still DHCP the public IP address to the router, and that a PC could be connected to the switch with self assigned static IP 192.168.2.***. That way the Vigor 120 is still being used as an active link by the router, and a PC (that admittedly can't contact the rest of the network or access the internet) can get to the Vigor 120's stats.

Would that work? I don't have a clue how PPPoE works and whether it would play ball with a switch in-between though...

Here's how I do it with the 120 when using a PPPoE connection:

1. First, connect the 120 to a PC and give it (the 120) a fixed IP address on the same subnet as the router.

2. Now move the 120 onto a LAN port of the router.

3. Connect a patch cable between a second LAN port on the router and the router's WAN port.

You can now address the 120 from any machine on the LAN, using the IP address you gave it in 1.

This won't work with dual WAN setups or MPoA connections though

What firmware did you upgrade to Mr White?

I've just grabbed a new 120 v2 out of our cupboard. That's running 3.2.4.4 (321311) which looks to be an international F/W. Oddly it's dated stamped 16 July 2010 but Draytek reckon 3.2.4.4 was released September 2010.

Sorry I can't remember, I left that job about 4 months ago :(

Bumping this up

My thread on the Draytek forum (which you have to register to even read ) has had two new replies...

I'm on O2 and configured my Vigor 120 to use MPoA Bridged, gave the Vigor 120 a LAN address of 192.168.0.254 and connected it to a LAN port on my Linksys WRT610n (on range 192.168.0.x), then connected a patch cable from another WRT610n LAN port to the WRT610n WAN port. Configured the WAN interface on the WRT610n with my O2 static IP address settings.

Now I can access the Vigor on address 192.168.0.254, my WRT610n on 192.168.0.1 and all my other devices are somewhere in between. :)

The only downside is you lose two LAN ports (and need a second small patch cable).
So that's Voodle's suggestion but working with MPoA.

I run a WRT54GS (with Tomato 1.28) and a Vigor 120 on Tiscali/TalkTalk.

In order to access the Vigor's web interface and telnet, I set up a static route on my router.

Code:
Destination: 192.168.2.0
Gateway: *
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Metric: 0
Interface: vlan1 (WAN)
For the destination, if you've changed the subnet, put your own, but just make sure your internal network is on a different subnet or you'll have issues.

I'm not sure of the procedure to do this on a Draytek router, but I'm sure it's quite similar.

That's something new I hadn't heard of before! Anyone here tried anything like that?
