Looking at replacing the Vodafone broadband route to accommodate the circa 25 devices now at home, NAS devices, BT Wireless APs, iPhones, IOT devices etc.

Starting point is to replace the router and then probably replace the Wireless APs so that I can VLAN off the IoT devices etc.

Has anyone had recent experience of the Draytek Vs Ubiquiti device?

You'll need a separate VDSL2 modem with the EdgeRouter, assuming you're on FTTC and not their Gigafast service. If you're happy with buying a separate modem then I'd put forward a Netgate SG-1100 as a better option than either of the two devices you're considering.

EdgeRouter 4 is a *beast* of a router. Draytek is not anywhere near the same league.

In what way? Direct performance comparison between the two listed models?

Other than the GUI, which i will happily admit can be a head-scratcher for new users, Draytek's are solid and reliable units and possibly could work out being cheaper than deploying a ER4 + Modem + AP.

For price I’m sure you’re right. My assumption is if someone mentions an ER4 they understand that price difference.

As with lots of things Ubiquiti, the EdgeRouter line is let down by their software development which appears to have stalled.

I'm just in the process of selling my Edgerouter 4, would I recommend it? No. As above the development seems to have stalled and lots of functions are CLI only - I managed to get my ER4 working well but the featureset and ease of use of PFSense wins easily.

Draytek routers are easy to setup, use and have some nice features, I do find their hardware overpriced for their (very well hidden) hardware specs.

What do you think is missing from ER? I'm extremely satisfied with it, I agree development has stalled, but the hardware is solid and there's not a single feature (that I need) missing right now.

Do they still struggle to do an IPsec tunnel at the same time as having IPsec clients connect? There's also broken offloading in the 2.x release line on the older devices which has been ongoing for a year now. I've also been hit by the ancient kernel on the AirMax line requiring them to use soft interrupts which limits a 450Mbps PHY to ~200Mbps of actual throughout - again, a known issue but the only updates have been months of 'this is a hard problem to solve' (their website will still tell you that you can do 450Mbps IP throughput on their AirMax AC radios).

I just don't have the time to deal with that stuff any more, and fortunately I am not budget restrained that I'd have to.

I don't think I count because I use a Fortigate
What are you using now?

(None off those issues affect me, thankfully).

Vodafone router with BT home Wi-Fi APs, time to replace the Vodafone router for several reasons. With an increasing count of IoT devices the Vodafone router doesn’t provide the granularity I want for VLANs and rules.

even my oven has an internet connection! Never plan on using the turn it on remotely function, but certainly happy for it to talk to a time server etc. However this device I want to ensure is on it’s own VLAN with a locked down firewall rule.

BT home Wi-Fi APs going to be replaced with a Unifi AP solution.

i’d Love to have a Fortigate in there as have installed / managed them before at various work places. ££ though

Netgate is on the list too with a modem from Draytek.
