Dreamfall:The longest Journey

Does the plot in this game follow on from the original Longest Journey game? I like the look of this new one but I'm wondering if I should play the original game first.
 
I've played about 1/4 of it I reckon. You don't really need to know the first game beforehand - the details are explained afresh as you go along really because things have changed somewhat. It's quite good but I don't think as gripping as the first one.
