Drill and Bits - Recommendations

When it comes to drilling it’s Bosch all the way for me, their blue multi use bits are ace, they’ll go through wood, masonry and tiles and have used mine so much.

Oh there is, last year I had a 'metal' job on and after hours of getting nowhere sent the wife to purchase some Milwaukee bits, the difference was day & night.

Yes, but I would argue it's all down to how much you pay. Milwaukee are usually a lot more expensive than Makita.

Makita seem to be the cheap Chinese sort you find all over the place, but then Makita sets are usually cheap. They are OK for the money, but there is certainly better out there if you don't mind spending more.

For me, I find most mid-range drills sufficient. The only exception to that is if you drill a lot of wood, then treat yourself to a set of cobalt wood drills. They are worth it. Or use drills intended for metal.

The worst drills are spade drills. Darn it, I must learn how to sharpen them!

A fair few of the companies have signed up to the CAS thing - shared batteries and all that. Worth bearing in mind.

I think, now don’t quote me on this you can buy adapters and use batteries from other tools as it’s just a positive and negative charge.

As companies are starting to do items that come with adaptors to use with what ever brand of battery you have.

It’s annoying having to be stuck to the one platform. Especially for me as hilti don’t do a vast range of tools but I may have to go down the route of just buying a charger a couple of batteries and start buying random stuff.

I have a team of guys who use either DeWalt, Milwaukee and Mikita.

They have both ranges, 18v and 12v and I have the 40v along with the other 2.

I am Makita, I have all the 18v and decided to move over to 40v range. Whilst doing that I wanted 12v Milwaukee after being super impressed with them.

My lowdown, if you want compact with decent power it's the Milwaukee 12v. If you want power and decent warranty then Makita. The 40v is pretty amaZing, I do only have the 40v combi and slowly moving my power hungry tools to 40v, such as band saw, grinder. The rest of my tools are Makita 18v and they have been abused to say the least.

I've had a few tools fail on me after more than 2 years (combi, sds, multi tool) of mostly daily abuse and Makita have always returned within a week fixed.

I wanted to go Milwaukee after trialing their 12v range. But Milwaukee 18v/40v is just solid with a great warrenty so I stayed with them.
FWIW my Milwaukee sander packed in last week. Within 9 hours UPS were at my door to collect, and then it was redelivered the following working day. All done online/no human contact other than the UPS chap showing up. Really great service.

I've got a Ryobi brushless drill and i've been really impressed with it, i'm sure it's not as good as a decent Makita or de-walt or whatever but i'm only a home DIY'er i'm not using them for a business and their whole ecosystem is far more affordable.

I've not had any issues drilling with it, i mostly do metal work so it does lots 10mm of holes in 5mm mild steel and lots of 6mm holes in 10mm mild steel bar for reference. Not sure how hard going drilling steel is compared to say masonry as i've don't very very little of that, steel is all about low RPM consistency and it's been very good for me.

The most important bit is having nice sharp drill bits, no drill will be any good with a dull bit so make sure you keep them sharp, then even fairly cheap bits will still work well.
