Without looking how many (1 unit) drinks do you think the average person (say 77kg male) would and should have to have before being over the limit? Without taking in to account time taken to process\absorb the alcohol.

I occasionally drive after one pint of average pub strength bitter. No more than that otherwise I would taxi it or stay over.

What's the law on drink driving in England and Wales?

In England and Wales, the alcohol limit for drivers is 80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath or 107 milligrammes per 100 millilitres of urine. In most other European countries, the limit is less, usually 50 milligrammes per 100 millilitres of blood (3)

Everyone is different. You may find that you could drink 5 pints and be under the limit, whilst your scrawny 5ft friend would be technically over the limit after 2.

Don't drink and drive folks :o

Is this an average male with average hydration, average food intake, average health, average liver function?

Too many variables! That's why a specific quantity is never mentioned....

Have you been pulled?

Conventional wisdom always seemed to be two pints of 4% beer (i.e. around 4 units of alcohol) was under the drink drive limit for an average male. However there are a bunch of variables including age, hydration, food, how much you've been drinking previously. You've said you want to discount absorption time (again conventional wisdom was that it takes an hour for the alcohol to get fully into your blood and then you process it out at the rate of one unit every two hours) so I suppose the simple answer to your question would be you can knock back 4 1 unit shots and then drive and theoretically be under the limit. Although doing so sounds very unwise!

How wrong is my common knowledge on this?

It's not many IIRC, but you can avoid the risk by drinking on the go. By the time it's in your system, you'll be at your destination.

Trust me, I'm a doctor.

There is no answer to this question. Everyone is so very different.

The proper answer is simple - If you want to drive, you don't drink anything alcoholic.
