Is the legal age still 21? I'd really really like to go to Coyote Ugly but I'm only 18. Is there anywhere I could drink/go in the evening?

Last time I was there I got in somewhere by convincing the meathead bouncer that cos the legal age was 18 in the UK it was legal for me to drink lol.

21 it is - and in new york city they are very strict on ID.

Once they ask you for id you legally have to produce something to show them or you will not get in.

My 38 year old brother in law got asked for ID, obviously at that age he doesn;t carry any id, and they refused to let him in to a bar with his wife!!!

Most states in the US are over 21, you'll need ID even if are 40 and look 40, they ID everyone and it is the norm.

p.s. Coyoto Ugly bar doesn't look like the movie :p

I dont know how people dont carry ID with them, I have my drivers licence with me at all times, as with my uni cards gym memberships and a few others.

All US states are 21 years. It's not federal law but the mandate came down in the 1970s that any state who maintained a drinking age under 21 years would be denies all federal highway funding. Needless to say, every state jumped in line.

To the OP, the best you can hope for is slipping the bouncer a tenner or something like that. If you get kicked out of any bars you might try asking the bouncer where you might go. I found that that tends to work, though I have no experience in New York City.

my driving licence is my only form of ID that I usually carry on me... I think the last time I was asked for ID (not including airports and the States) was about 11 years ago...

What is the form when drinking in resturants? Is that 21 too?
All alcoholic beverages are covered. I think there is an exception for those having less than 1% alcohol by volume. there are also exceptions for married people (your spouse can buy alcohol for you legally if she/he is over 21), Clergy (your minister can serve you alcohol if he/she is over 21), doctors (your doctor can perscribe you alcohol), and parents (your parent can serve you alcohol if he/she is over 21). Other than that the ban is across the board.

I didn't get ID'd once in NYC, I'm only 26 and there was a girl in our group who looks 24 max. Yes, if you get ID'd you're screwed, but don't let that put you off trying.

I recommend the Manchester Bar on the corner of 2nd and 50th, great wee place with nice, reasonably priced food, a good selection of booze, a fine jukebox and a great atmosphere.

It's 3.2% percent IIRC. Lots of states offer alcohol under the 3.2% mark to 18 year olds (and, incidentally, on Sundays), and "proper" alcohol to over-21s; Colorado is one and there are a few others too I think.

Not since I've been alive has one been able to buy "three two beer" under the age of 21. You can't really find the stuff anymore becasue the market was 18-21 year olds. They changed the law so that you had to be older to buy and no one 21+ cared for the horrid stuff.

EDIT: Here's the law that changed it.
