Hi all,

This afternoon I have been having an arguement with my friend about drink driving.

I had 1 pint to drink after having my lunch meal of 3 bread rolls. I then half a glass of water and watched a film for an hour and a half and then went for a drive. He thinks I was taking a huge risk.

I am 20 years old, 6'3" and weigh approx 14 stone and have been drinking since I was about 15-16. Least to say I know what my limit is and I consider myself to be a very responsible drinker apart from the occasional *mandatory* binge night, every blue moon.

Now what is your opinon? Was I taking a risk?

My other question is. Can you please explain the breathaliser test, how alcohol affects your body, with, and then without food.

What do YOU think the legal limit should be in general? What do you think the legal limit should be for YOU? If you think it should differ for you.

1hr per unit + 30mins..

So one pint is roughly 2.5units so 3hrs to completley dissapate. So you should be more than safe enough after a film.

I personally don't drink at all if I'm driving. I know that dependent on what I've eaten/frame of mind I'm in, alcohol can affect me after anything from half a pint on a hot day to 3 or 4 glasses of wine when I'm all hyped up for a night out.

However I know that if I was to have even 1 drink and drive and something happened, I would always wonder if it was because my reactions were delayed because of the alcohol.

Just my opinion but I'd rather people who were driving didn't drink at all. It's just one night, it's not the end of the world. :) It sounds like you can more than handle it from what you've said, but I'd rather not take the risk at all.

You had a drink so your taking a risk

Are you kidding me? I don't mean to be rude but how old are you and do you think that with drinking carelessness and iresponsibilty comes automatically after it?

Please, I want serious comments. Not some anti socialist granny. No flame intended i just think that opinion is ridiculous.

I was going to say pretty much the exact same thing. I would never touch a drop and drive after.

Yeh that would work.. Everyone would be banned. The body produces a very small amount..

Driving
Alcohol limit is 80 milligrams (mg) of alcohol in 100 millilitres (ml) of blood

Network rail and all railway staff is something like 27milligrams (mg) and is one of the tightest in the world.

TBH i dont see the problem. Admittedly alcohol effects everyone differently blah blah blah. But 1 pint spread over 2 hours or so, with a meal aswell in a big fella is going to do sweet fa.

I'm a small person, don't have any fat on me. One pint goes to my head quite quickly so if I was to drive after it, it would be extremely silly. The initial feelings I get off one pint are gone within minutes, so after an hour and a half I probably would have forgot I had drank a pint.

This doesn't mean I think it is any less of a risk though. I don't drive but if I did I would just stick to a half if I felt I really needed a drink. Most likely I'd just do what my mate does and not have any alcohol for the whole day that I know I will be driving and just stick to soft drinks for that day.

Well im sure if we looked at the biology behind it all.

If we calculated my body mass and then added the alcohol units I had consumed. I would still be under the limit. Then add in the fact I've been drinking for a good 4-5 years already and had half a pint of water + 1 & half hour gap between the consumption of alcohol and me taking to the road. I think I was being extra safe. I think anything less than that is paranoid and no self-awareness of their body.

I'd say you were perfectly safe while driving because you had little to drink and left it a reasonable period. Alcohol slows your reactions and impairs your judgement as well as possible blurring of vision etc depending on how much you have drunk.

I don't drive after I've had a drink but then it is pretty easy for me I suppose not having a car ;) However even when I have the opportunity to drive someone elses car I wouldn't after drinking without a suitably long period in between. Possibly depending on the circumstances(emergency etc) I might have to but I'd always try to take a taxi or get someone else to drive if at all possible.

Why the heck was this moved to Motor? Think it was better suited in General discussion. Sure it has to do with cars but it also involves drinking... PLEASE MOVE IT BACK.

Colin.

Anything up to 2 pints and I'm fine to drive. I'm a big chap and I am not even remotely tipsy before 4 pints, I think the breathaliser is fine for under 2 pints.

i have had 3 pints in 3 hours and drove, according to the maths i *should* be under the legal limit. Drove past a few police cars and didn't get pulled, but wouldent do it again, my driving was noticably worse and i am not sure i could live with myself if i killed someone so i could have one more drink :(

Pints, shots, glasses of wine - depends on the event really

I hope you're joking... but anyway...

I never have more than 1 if I'm getting behind the wheel (bar once which was an emergency). I try not to have any at all though and if I decide I want more I'll leave the car and taxi it home. As Kitten said, I'd hate for anything to happen and wonder if it would have been different if I hadn't had that drink :(

how do you work that out, even the maths say you where over the limit/border liner.
