Drive configuration?

Hi,

A quick question for everyone.

I have 2 x 250gb sata drives that are now about 2 years old and one makes very loud noises (so i am guessing it is on its way out - especially as it has significantly slowed down in the last 6 months)

I also have a 500gb MyBook which i used as a automatic vista backup.

Anyway i have ordered a 500gb samsung spinpoint from OCUK, however i do not know in which way to configure these drives.

I will continue to use the Mybook as a backup but i am wondering if i should buy a raptor for vista , use the 500gb spinpoint for storage and the 2 x 250gb drives raided for games.

I am not willing to risk installing vista on the raided drives considering i know one of them to be faulty and will undoubtedly die. So do i install vista and have files on the same drive (samsung spinpoint 500gb) or will i see a significant improvement by having a 36gb raptor and having vista on that :) with files stored on the spin point :)

Bit late now I suppose but I've only just seen this thread.

I personally wouldn't bother with the Raptor as it is quite a bit extra cash for a little extra speed and a massive decrease in space. It would probably make most sense to get the Spinpoint and partition it with say 30gb for Vista and the rest for files.

Sounds good to me :) save myself £70 :)

I guess i could always but another spin point in a month or so if i find myself running out of space or the drive starts slowing down :)

Another random question, I was was to put vista on a 30gb partition on the drive, use the rest for storage, would i see a speed increase in vista by putting all other programs on a different drive, as i would not be using up so much of that particular drives bandwidth :)

The 30gb is just a guess for Vista space, you might need to up it slightly as I haven't installed my copy yet to see how much space it takes up.

If you put the programs on another drive it might help, more of a difference would come from putting the page file onto a second drive normally but with 4gb Ram the point is largely academic unless you regularly exceed that amount with open programs.

Your best bet is the buy the 1TB Spinpoint which is very fast and spacious.

Already purcahsed the 500gb :)

and i will have 1.5tb of space now anyway, 2tb would be excessive at this point in time!

...........(until i start my dissertation) (damm GIS ARCmap files being 10's of GBs)

ok i will try putting the programs on one of the spare drives :) (the working one)
