So, I have a sony A200 DSLR and it uses compact flash. I couldn't find the usb cable for the camera so I took the CF card out and put it in to my card reader. Windows 7 said that the disk had to be formatted before it could be used. Err, hang on Windows, this has 300 pictures on it, I'm not going to format it.

So, I eventually found the cable, put the CF card back into the camera (which now says no images). Plug it into my laptop and the removable disk appears as such: (F: in this image)

But when opening said disk:

Is it borked? Time for a bit of Recuva or is there something else weird going on?

Hmm, The ScanDisk recovery program has found all the images lost which is good. Not free though! Trying TestDisk pic recover, looks to be doing a good job :)

Do testdisk pic recover, then use testdisk itself, it might recover the whole partition for you

When using photorec (test disk pic recover) or recuva, always restore them to a different drive. IE C:\

I'm sure you know that already, but it's a good tip for others anyway
