i dont think i have ever seen ryan gosling before, so would like to see if he can portray other types of characters well. so i don't know how good he was at acting or if that's the way he is normally but the character he played was extremely weird.
I first noticed Gosling about 10 years in "The Believer", a largely unnotable film if not for the fact that he gave one of the most jaw-dropping acting performances I've ever seen - certainly the best this millennium - truly astonishing from such a young and, at the time, unknown actor. The film and story overall are nothing special but he carries the move and makes it watchable, he dominates most of his scenes and is thoroughly compelling. I really ought to watch it again sometime.
Anyway back on topic, watched this tonight and thought it was a good film if perhaps a little short - it felt like the retributions played out a bit quick. A bit better than I was expecting, and the soundtrack was excellent and a nice surprise. One element I particularly liked was that unlike the formulaic nature of most films, at no point was the main 'hero' truly overwhelmed, he was able to deal with everything thrown at him.
Regarding the gore/violence, to be honest I felt some of it was unnecessary. Take the diner scene for example, is it really necessary to stab the guy in the eye, have him screaming and spouting blood for a bit, then wade in again on the neck to finish him off? Not saying it was bad - maybe it was a crutch to drop the "now you can clean up my mess for once" line - I just don't think it added anything to the film versus just executing him in a simple fashion.
One thing I did find a bit weird is you see a big police presence at the start of the film, but then basically nothing except for an interview with the wife after Standard gets bumped? I mean, there's this guy stabbed to death in a diner window, another bloke has his skull stoved in in the lift and everyone just wanders off, but the woman comes back to her apartment at some point, I mean the film basically portrays the authorities clamping down hard on robbery, but random murders are totally ignored.
