Just bought an HD enclosure & connected it up but windows is showing it as a foreign drive in disk manager? Says I can convert to basic but is there any risk of losing data from it?

Do not perform the conversion you will LOOSE your data.

It sounds like the disk has been converted to a Dynamic disk under an OS such as XP Pro / Win 2k3 and you are attempting to open the disk on either a laptop or a XP Home PC. (Both do not support Dynamic Disks) This situation will mark the drive as forign and offer you to convert it to a basic disk.

Agin the conversion will blank the drive.

Pretty much sums it up, taken from my PC which is now no more & trying to read it from a Laptop. So basically I can only read it by connecting it to a desktop?

Yup thats what you need to do.

You could connect is to your desktop copy the contecnt over to your main PC (If you have enough space) then perform the conversion back to a basic disk. Then copy the data back.

Then you will be able to use the drive on both systems.
