right - in our shop we have a cube PC and for the last few days its keep crashing - something terminal and to do with the HDD me thinks.

I really cant be bothered to go through all the hassle of reinstalling windows on a fresh HDD - what is the best FREE drive image software around so that I can simply copy the C drive to a new disk that I have please.

Also is this possible to do it from the HDD to a USB connected drive?

Acronis do a free trial of their drive imaging software 'Acronis True Image' which is one of the best. It supports USB in the version I have. The trial is on their website, free for 15 days.

I used the acronis true image trial the other week to do my girlfriends drive. Just back up all your important docs and take your time, I was quite impressed when I actually got it to work!

If it's crashing because of the hard drive failing, then the operating system may well be corrupted. Reinstalling it onto the new drive is a much safer bet

all done - I used the free version of dixmlsetup - copied over the old c (IDE) drive to a new SATA drive (f) all in all about 10Gb only - took 10 mins start to finish - now all working perfectly and totally painless!!!!!!

As I said its a cube pc used in my wife's shop - we use it for iTunes (the music is stored on a second HDD in the cube) and for internet access only (we use aclient/server database called cardbox) so the resources are hardly used really and its been fine for 2 years!

Anyway - I decided to take failed the HDD apart (WD caviar something or other) - always wanted to do this - and with my Ducati Screen Tool (star key) that fitted the screws perfectly - I had all the bits out of the case in about 5 minutes - nothing to them at all really - 2 platters - an arm - a small circuit board outside - a VERY strong magnet assembly over the arm - some dodgy looking brown balls in a sealed compartment inside the drive and thats it.

The two platters on their bearings are now adorned on my desk - they spin - round and round - its fun - how sad am I?
