Just reinstalled XP on a Compaq Presario SR1705 and downloaded all the drivers from the compaq website.

Everything worked fine apart from the Audio - The driver installed although its saying there is no mixing device and won't work. All audio codecs are installed in device manager.

The other thing is that there is an unknowen PCI device - Although there is nothing else in there apart from the WIFI card.

Any idea what would cause this?

Board Model no is: RC410-M - Tried to google the drivers for this although can't find anything for that model

The Compaq webpage says it uses the Realtek ALC883 chip for audio, therefore you need to download HD audio drivers from Realtek's website (not AC97). The audio codecs you mention are already installed regardless of whether your soundcard is or not.

Having looked at the drivers Compaq have to download on their website... all I can say is that they are ancient. The reason your audio probably isn't working is because the early Realtek HD driver installers did not come with the necessary Microsoft HD Azalia driver aswell. Newer packages do contain this.

There's a Windows Update patch too, so make sure you download them. I don't know which one it is, but there's more than the 1 that's often included in the drivers.

It's a standard download through WU though, so grab that, install the drivers, then if necessary, click the mysterious device in Device Manager and search for drivers - it should pick up a HD bus and install the drivers from there onwards.

Don't know why, but the Realtek HD drivers can be a bit of a pain this way.
