Driver: San Francisco (Driver 5)

i thoughht driver parralel lines was alright the gew drivers gone in the wrong direction though.

it doesnt scream premium title at all

I can remember the original. Never did complete. I was like 3 milliseconds late meeting some Rufus guy at a coffee house and still failed the mission.

Great game though. This is fun too dare I say it but this shifting thing? When I sat down to play I foolishly hoped I'd be trialed in some underground parking garage doing some quite difficult maneuveres, proving I'm the wheelman I need to be.

Instead I'm actually a cop, in a coma, dreaming of my consciousness jumping into different people where one instance I'm running an ambulance mission and the next doing stunts for a TV crew.

Not the driver I remember at all.

I remember the original, thought that was quite good.

I've always thought that it's the nice little sister when compared to the horrible big brother that is GTA III onwards really.

i have this game , i find it great fun tbh.

but im having graphic problems because it keeps running @ 24hz

I had the same problem with it running at 24hz (5850 card).

I got around it by either a) running it in a window or b)downloading ATI tray tools that allows you to force refresh rate of 60

thanks mate.

ATI tray tools works great , i've uninstalled ccc but i can't get ATI tray tools to enable/disable cf,

how does the xbox pad work on this as I got it currently as a block buster rental and must say with the limited time I've had with the game I'm quite enjoying it, but will be waiting for it to come down in price first , and I think i would be swayed to the pc version of it worked with a pad

I must say I was disappointed with this game when I first started playing it, after half an hour I began to think maybe it's not so bad after all, then I played the multiplayer & I had a blast:D

It's hilarious playing games like 'tag' where you are hurtling thru the traffic trying to touch the tagged car, then you become 'it' & all the other players cars are trying to ram you to get it back , the longer you hold the tag the more points you score. Steering round corners in SP mode seems better but in Multi I found it was like driving on ice, needs practice to keep the car going where you want it to even wit handbrake turns

You can soon see why they implemented the shift ability, if you wreck or seriously disable your car you can't jump out like GTA4 & grab another car so it would be game over whilst the other players continue the chase. Not only can you select another vehicle from high above but you can move the selector spot in any direction & can therefore catch up with the tagged car & then select a vehicle to be instantly in the drivers seat, sounds stupid? well no it works like a dream actually,

Reminds me of a game I played when my kids were small 'Midtown madness' :D

Just completed (the storyline of) this, bit of a strange experience if truth be told. At the start, I'm kinda thinking OK, this game looks pretty average in terms of graphics (kinda like a glorified GTA:SA with much better cutscenes), and the whole shifting thing seemed very bizarre. It throws you into the weird shifting stuff a bit early before you've really got to grips with the game and started to get to know the characters.

However, like the above poster after the first half an hour or so I actually came to like the game. It is fairly innovative, and the shifting works surprisingly well. It even lets them put some variety into the style of gameplay, with some sections that are almost like minigames:
-Protecting an armoured truck from incoming baddies by intercepting them before they reach it (kinda like interactive tower defence)
-Controlling your car from weird angles (chasing car, isometric viewpoint)
-Puzzle section (escaping nightmare on deja vu mission)

The key thing is that once I got past my initial expectation of a vaguely serious game (as was the case with Driv3r and DRV:PL), it is actually a lot of fun. The one downside is that shifting ahead of your target to take over an ongoing car and then going for a head-on smash, while fun, will eventually get old and it makes the game a bit too easy. I completed the game in 6.5hrs and don't really feel like going back to attempt Dares, Challenges etc, which I gave up on after the first couple of chapters.

Another side effect of being able to shift is that it basically means there is little point buying cars. I started the game with a Dodge Challenger R/T, and never felt compelled to buy another car as often you hop into others for missions.

Also, while I understand the game can't be taken too seriously, it does feel a bit macabre that you are so concerned about the safety of the city yet think nothing of hijacking a soccer mom taking her kids to practice and slamming her SUV head-on into an oncoming truck at over 100mph. I'm surprised there was room for me in the hospital after the hundreds of accidents I staged.

Overall I'd say this is a good game, the cutscenes and dialog are strong (making some of the chases more interesting), performance is excellent (solid 120fps) and the shift mechanic is quite original. The non-vehicle sections of the last couple of games were pretty weak so I think they made a good decision to focus on vehicles, with a twist. If I had to a pick a game to compare it with, I'd say it is closer to Wheelman than the GTA series. I'd recommend it in the sub £10 price bracket.

Thanks for your thoughts. It has been going for less than a tenner for a while now, I will pick it up once I've completed something else.
