Anyone able to direct me to a good driver updater programme that manages to update those obscure system board drivers etc and is free? Failing that, one that represents good value for money.

None of them.

Avoid at absolutely all costs.

Do not fix what is not broke, letting an application update every driver it finds an update for is a ridiculous idea.

The only things you should be updating frequently on a PC, driver wise, is GPU (Where performance benefits are apparent) or when large feature sets are unlocked/bettered with a BIOS update and drivers are required to use them (Intel RAID and RST updates for example).

Normally, I'd 100% agree with Sin Chase and PapaLazaru in this situation.

But I've had about 2 or 3 computers that I simply could not find a working driver for. The audio driver on the Dell site just made them blue screen.

First I tried every driver that the manufacturer made, either they didn't work, or had instant blue screens.

Then I downloaded the Driverspacks drivers, extract them, mounted them to cd, and again, blue screen.

The third and final solution was using a program called SlimDrivers, the one that it downloaded for the soundcard worked perfectly.

I only use this as a last ditch attempt. And I uninstall it right away after using it!

edit

This is what I'd use!

http://drp.su/download.htm

100% free and they use the Driverpacks files

edit2 watch the installer, it's got crapware :/ untick the first one, next. then decline the next

Yeah, I've seen mention of SlimDrivers elsewhere too. There's a free version and a paid one.
